If you have 64bit Windows 10 you may want to read the following transcript of my chat with support before buying a Garmin device...

[03:28:43] Graham: I cannot install the latest express software. This is despite running as administrator and using a third party uninstaller to delete all references to Garmin from my registry. I am 64bit Windows 10.
[03:28:44] You are joining a chat with Graham
[03:29:03] Ben: Hi Graham

[03:29:25] Ben: please give me a moment to look into this.

[03:30:16] Graham: It searched for an old MSI file, finds it, then says it is an old version
[03:31:44] Ben: so you have an old version installed and you can't update to the latest ?

[03:31:55] Ben: or just can't install express in general

[03:32:13] Graham: I did have an old version but my registry cleaner has deleted all the old references to it
[03:32:59] Graham: I have version 5 which should now be a clean install but it is still searching for this msi file
[03:33:41] Ben: so when you try and install it just keeps searching for a msi file and won't complete ?

[03:33:52] Graham: Yes, that is correct
[03:34:23] Ben: please have a look at this Graham - https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-US/faq/content/rnd8crAeQB2UCFOnbm9eLA

[03:36:28] Graham: Have done that. The only one that still existed was the elevated installer, this has now gone
[03:37:24] Ben: no problem please give me a moment to look into this

[03:38:26] Graham: Just tried installing again - still looking for the msi file despite all instances now removed
[03:39:46] Ben: thanks Graham just going to investigate further

[03:44:49] Ben: I haven't heard from you in a while. Would you like to continue chatting?
[03:44:54] Ben: unfortunately there is nothing else we can suggest here. I have spoke to our software team and this is a windows issue

[03:45:11] Ben: sorry Graham

[03:45:20] Ben: was looking for anything else we could try here

[03:45:47] Graham: So no more updates for my machine then. It is NOT a windows issue it IS a Garmin issue. Please fix it
[03:48:30] Ben: all we can suggest is another PC. windows repair or a windows reinstall

[03:48:59] Ben: I'm sorry Graham I have investigated further and these are the options we have

[03:49:50] Graham: So even if I bought a new device, Express still won't work on my machine?
[03:50:49] Ben: yes this isn't linked to the device at all. the windows system is causing the problem

[03:50:51] Graham: I bought this device to recive the free lifetime updates. It seems your version of 'lifetime' is around 4 years.
[03:51:45] Ben: if you can borrow a pc or mac and run the updates Graham this will work. updates only become available once a year

[03:52:00] Graham: Will you stop saying it is a Windows problem as it certainly is not! It is your software problem. Are you going to compensate me?
[03:52:06] Ben: I appreciate that isn't the easiest solution but you will be able to get the latest updates this way

[03:54:03] Ben: I have spoken to my software team Graham who have reported back to me and I can't do anything further from here. if the computer is unable to remove all the registry entries for a particular program they are not placed in the correct places by the windows installation

[03:54:26] Graham: I tell you what, I will take a hammer to this Garmin and go and buy a device that does work such as a TomTom. Thanks for nothing.
[03:54:32] Graham has exited the session.
