"There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect" keeps coming back to haunt me...

So, after twice fixing the "There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect" error (mostly on my FR935, tho' it's also happened on my FR630), it came back once again on the FR935.

Each time, I followed the steps I'd been given by the Garmin support rep (I'm on a PC):

  • Go to Garmin device in Explorer
  • Delete folders ACTIVITY, NEWFILES, REMOTESW on the device itself
  • Eject device, restart device
  • Plug in device, sync again

... if the above don't help, then:

  • Quit Garmin Express
  • Eject Garmin device, restart device
  • Go to %ProgramData%\Garmin\CoreService\Devices
  • Move the folder corresponding to the problem device elsewhere
  • Restart Garmin Express
  • Plug in Garmin device
  • Sync again

The first group of steps has never helped, if and unless I do the 2nd group of steps as well.

So it appears that, somehow, the files in one or both locations are becoming corrupted.

Ideally, this shouldn't be happening; Garmin hasn't been able to tell me why this is. I suspect, however, that Garmin Express is attempting to sync or otherwise do something to the data files while I'm putting my computer to sleep for the day. I've noticed the Garmin Express icon rotating at random times, so I think it must have its own internal schedule. I could fiddle with the "Scheduling" parameters to see if that stops it.

In any case, until recently, I always used to shut down Garmin Express when I was done syncing; it's only recently that I have left it running all the time. I'm going to go back to shutting it down when I'm done using it to see if this fixes the problem.

Has anyone else seen this issue come back time after time?

Do you think it is caused by what I suspect? Or do you think it's possible that my FR935 is somehow faulty? I hope it's not the latter.

  • This is still occurring. Is anyone else having this problem? I get this problem more than half the time I try to sync using Garmin Express. Syncing with the phone app works all the time, but I'd rather be able to sync with Garmin Express, as it's a LOT faster (when it works).

  • I had the same with my 735XT, the 2nd part of your instructions helped to resolve it. Thanks tbessie!

I think it might be due to corrupt activity fit file. you could go out and fix them one by one by this tool: http://garmin.kiesewetter.nl/ but as the fit files are not needed anymore when the files are already synced you can just as well delete the folder... (I mostly sync with garmin mobile) and use as my 'real' logbook Sportracks 3 desktop which doesn't have an issue syncing over the usb cable...

  • had it occur again today, don't know if it's related but not being able to sync occurred right after the watch had locked up when connecting it to usb (i had to soft reset the watch to turn it back on).

Same USB issue happened to me. And also, GE fails to sync since then. On two PCs so I assume the issue is with the watch?
Anzthing besides a factory reset to fix this? I have just a couple days with the watch but lots of customizations I wouldn't want to lose
