Garmin Express auto-update does not seem to work correctly

As per the subject line: Garmin Express auto-update does not seem to work correctly - at least for me. Might be a remnant of the previous / similar issue highlighted a month ago or so in this thread:

https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?372743-New-esu-exe-NET-error-entry-in-Event-Viewer-since-5-3-0-0-release

To cut the long story short:

* New GE Express has been released yesterday (5.4.1.0)
* Old version on my PC must have tried to update itself today - so has removed itself from my PC and tried to install a new version. But this process has finished with a failure:

(Details: Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Garmin Express. Product Version: 5.4.1.0. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Garmin Ltd or its subsidiaries. Installation success or error status: 1603.)

Obviously at this stage GE is no longer installed on my machine - which is not great as it's beyond my control, of course.

* When I try to install it now using stand-alone GarminExpressInstaller.exe I see this:

Which tallies with my experience in the earlier thread above.

I will restart my PC in a due course and expect that re-installation will be successful afterwards.

Can somebody please have a look at this issue as it's rather lousy and annoying bug?
  • I was right yet again, after PC was restarted GE has been installed correctly:

And everything seems to be back to normal. Until the next auto-update...

    GarminSupport, can you please advise?

Also, has anybody else experienced this issue?

These forums are mainly user to user.

You need to contact support to make sure that they know this.

In my case it did not try to automatically update. But when I select it from the Express menu it failed, but left Express along.

When to Garmin website and download and install without any problem.
  • Yeah, but GarminSupport also peruses these forums regularly so I gather this thread might attract their attention.

My point is and this happens at least on my PC: GE auto-update process consistently results in GE merely removing itself completely due to subsequent auto-re-install failure - restart in-between seems needed for this process to complete successfully. Which I guess is not-exactly-expected and frankly annoying outcome.

The only way around it currently is to update GE manually by removal/restart/install from scratch.
  • Just found two logs in \TEMP folder. Browsing these quickly exposes the following entries once old version has been removed and new one started being installed:

    According to information from here:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/974061/you-receive-an-error-code-0x80070643-when-you-try-to-install-windows-live-essentials

error code 0x80070643 usually means that This issue occurs because a previous installation puts the computer in a state where a restart is pending.

Which probably makes sense, as that's exactly what I think happens here: one GE component fails to be installed and issue is cleared once restart takes place.

Still, this this should be definitely looked at and such conduction should be preempted correctly.
  • Hey Garmin

Just to let you know that your GE v5.5.0.0 released today behaves exactly the same as above (at least on my machine) - removal is quick and then installer fails to deploy 'Garmin Device Interaction Service' during upgrade process.
  • I've never had any luck with GE auto updating across any Windows PC's. Raised a issue about a year ago and have given up now and just do manual updates.
  • Yeah, but GarminSupport also peruses these forums regularly so I gather this thread might attract their attention.

If you want Garmin to support you, then you need to contact Garmin Support directly.

If it's any consequence I see similar issues on my iMac. However, I just can't bring myself to get too excited about it.

It's not worth my effort really - I have some (varied) experiences with them to date... Also, judging by responses from others it does look like it's slightly more widespread and not isolated case - so some noise around this issue will not hurt and perhaps this trivial bug will eventually be sorted?

Funny enough, I experienced issues on my father-in-law's Windows XP PC this week where I eventually had to reinstall GE v.3 to get things sorted. And pronto: exactly the same error message was produced upon reinstallation! The remedy was to restart the PC as well

In my opinion that's inherent rather than accidental behaviour, as I can't imagine that both our PCs are all of a sudden mis-configured?

This thread is about updated Garmin Express, but based on the times that you are talking about it sounds like you are talking about updating a large map.

At each point in time it looks at the amount of data that still needs to be download and the CURRENT rate that it is getting data.

The data rate can vary for a number of reasons; problems in your internet connection that is causing errors and retries, data loads in the paths to the server, and the speed of the server and the number of people downloading from it at any one time. And several other reasons.

Thus it is not uncommon to see the time left to make jumps up and down.
