Garmin Express using 64Gb SD card

I am looking for a solution for using 64Gb SD cards with a Montana 680. The 64Gb SD cards are formatted FAT32 and work great with everything but Garmin Express.
We bought 24K Topo maps and Garmin Express won't recognize them to download the maps to them.

Until a few months back, we could use the My.garmin.com portal to download 24K Topo maps to 64Gb SD cards with no problem.
Since changing and now requiring Garmin Express to register/download maps, that won't work anymore.

I called support and they noted they never have supported 64Gb SD cards. Support was the ones who told me I could use them, as long as they were formatted as FAT32.

Any help would be appreciated.

I bought a 64gb card with my 680t, could not get It recognised, found some docs somewhere on the web that said 32gb max. Bought a 32 and it worked perfectly. Can't find that document on Garmin website but have seen it mentioned on other forums.

Just to clarify: it's not GE not supporting 64GB SD cards - as I think it actually might in cases of newer devices (I may be mistaken though?).

I think it's rather a per-device restriction. Consider this list for automotive devices:

  • All SD cards are not SD cards...

0-2GB are straightforward SD cards, readable in SDXC, SDHC & SD capable devices
4-32GB are SDHC cards - readable in SDXC & SDHC capable devices, but not SD-only devices.
32GB-2TB are SDXC cards - readable only in SDXC-capable devices, but neither SDHC nor SD-only devices.

SDXC memory cards must only be used with SDXC devices.
SDXC devices can use SD memory cards, SDHC memory cards and SDXC memory cards.
SDHC memory cards can be used with SDHC devices and SDXC devices.
SDHC devices can use both SD memory cards and SDHC memory cards.
SD devices can only use SD memory cards

Typically is it not possible to make an existing SDHC device SDXC capable in software/firmware - but requiring new hardware.
