Map Install Location

Garmin Express (Windows) > Map Options > Install Map to Computer > Install Location > C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps

The Location C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps cannot be changed post-install.

However, due to the large space requirement, it should be made possible.

Thanks!
  • I'm confused, why are you wanting to change it post install? Why not simply change it pre-install?

The hard coded storage location for the Basecamp Maps that have huge space requirements cannot be changed in pre-install either. Just the Express location which does not matter since it is small can be changed.

Please consider a flexible storage location for:

Garmin Express (Windows) > Map Options > Install Map to Computer > Install Location > C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps

in the next release. Thank you!
  • You should post that here http://www8.garmin.com/contactUs/ideas/ but please note you can change the map location, but only if you download to device and computer ... see https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-US/faq/content/yqTQvDbUMf5j1ydnSQZ2qA

The map install location can be changed but only the first time. After this, all the Windows Registry keys are written instructing Garmin Express to install to the same location on each install after that. To change it, all the maps need to be uninstalled. Here is our FAQ on this information:

Unable to change the install location during a map update in Garmin Express

Instructions on installing maps to a different drive can be found in this FAQ as noted by SUSSAMB:

  • Garmin Express Uninstall

I attempted to uninstall Garmin Express and Maps per instructions given closely which failed.

I uninstalled Garmin Express and removed all its constituenties including Registry Entries plus %localappdata%, %appdata% and so forth.

I rebooted and tried to run GarminExpressInstaller.exe which then says "Garmin Express is already installed."

It appears that it is not possible to uninstall this software successfully once it is on a computer. A clean uninstall is usually a low priority task when developing software. However, my DriveAssist 51 cannot be updated any more. I doubt s.o. will post the relevant hexadecimal entry that needs to be elivated to remove Garmin Express.

Any advice except from the code developers that will be given to resolve the issue I have tried already. I am on the lastet updated Windows10 version.

    Thank you!
  • This is likely an issue with your system. Try using the Microsoft Utility to completely uninstall Garmin Express. This software is third-party and not created by Garmin. The software is licensed and created by Microsoft.

When uninstalling Garmin Express select as necessary:

    •Garmin Express
    •Garmin Express Tray
    •Elevated Installer
•Garmin Update Services (skip if not present)
    •ANT Drivers Installer x64

Then install Garmin Express directly from http://download.garmin.com/omt/express/B/GarminExpressInstaller.exe
  • Success

This procedure works! (I have a clean Windows10.)
  • two .img files for City Navigator Europe NTU

I noticed that I have two .img files on the DriveAssist 51 for City Navigator Europe NTU 2018.1 v21.10:

    d6210030a.img
    gmapprom.img

which is also noticed by Basecamp. Are these redudant files w/ identical content or do I need both of them?

    Thanks again!
  • You need both, at least I believe you do but as you don't say which folder they're in I can't be sure.
