Cannot Update Maps via Express even though a 16GB SD Card is Installed

I pulled my Edge 1000 out of winter hibernation and Express said that I had a map update. I plugged it in and it prompted me that I need an SD card installed for sufficient room. Ok, I happened to have a new 16GB micro SD card (formatted FAT32 and it's a standard class 10 Sandisk) and I put in it the 1000. I powered it up, then plugged it into my PC. I saw that it created about 9 top-level folders on the SD card, etc. Everything appeared to be fine.

Then I started up Garmin Express and it found the 1000 without issue. Map update was still there, so I started walking through the update map wizard and this time I didn't get prompted for an SD card or anything. It just returned the following message:

"We're unable to install the updates

The latest version of these maps have so much new information the we're not going to be able to fit it all on your device's internal memory. Please contact product support for help with updating your maps."

So I go from being prompted to install an SD card to when after I install one, Express just completely ignores the ~14.8 GB that are free. I've shut down and rebooted the PC, I've shut down and restarted the 1000 and made sure it connected to wifi (it did) and picked up satellites and was getting the correct time (it was).

Is this a known issue? Perhaps a bug in the Express software?

Since this was moved here, this is the info on my software/hardware:

    Garmin Express: 5.3.1.0

    Edge 1000: software version 12.10

Note that during the time I was (initially) prompted for the SD card to install the new map, I believe this was before my device installed the 12.10 update (via wifi). So I'm not clearly sure if this is a device or Express problem.

    Same thing

    Same thing.
Called Garmin. They told me that maps cannot be loaded on an SD card, period, it will never work.

I deleted some img files and was able to update the maps on the internal memory.

I am still not sure whether or not I did the right thing but it seems to have worked.

So what did Garmin give you as a solution? Did they recommend deleting the img/map files on the internal storage or did you do that on your own?

I don't think the idea is to "load" or install the maps on the internal memory card; my guess was that the memory card was just a temporaty place to house the files until they were moved to the internal storage.

I'm still not sure if this is an edge 1000 problem or an Express problem. Can this be moved back into the Edge 1000 forum? I can't be the only one with this issue.
  • same problem here. with brand new edge 1000

I was given a ticket number and they said my email was added to that (have not gotten confirmation that it was fixed yet). He was hoping in the next few days, but if it is still presenting an error then I'd imagine it is taking a bit longer...
  • The issue with the cycle map updates has been reported and is being researched. We will update this post when more information is available.
