EU 2018.10 maps have just been released

...and as with the previous glorious release plenty of joy: It does look like one of the previous maps (D6210020A.img [2GB], corresponding to CN Europe NTU 2017.30 ALL South in the Map folder of the GPS) has not been deleted from my nuvi when it was eventually updated for starters...

Is there a chance that such errors are eventually going to be mopped up at some stage?

Same here plus other bits and pieces although later Map Install discovered them, stated that they were not required and requested permission to delete them which of course I agreed to. You'd think that by this time - considering the numerous update releases over the years - Garmin would have got a handle on what they are supposed to be doing. As it is I think they make it up as they go along LOL.
  • All my devices updated without issue.

    Exception proves the rule.

I am not saying that update itself was problematic - it was spotless indeed. If it was not for me launching BaseCamp later and discovering that it reports additional old map on my device, I would not have spotted it either.

    Indeed!

Haven't seen that either. Note if, and I'm not saying you have, maps are installed unilaterally in some way then Express won't uninstall them as it cannot determine whether they should be deleted or not. Provided you use Express to install your maps then it will delete any maps previously installed using Express.

An why on earth would I do manage them myself? Unit comes with lifetime map updates and there's only GE that updates them? Besides (allegedly): Garmin Express is your one-stop shop for keeping your nüvi, zūmo or dēzl up-to-date.

Clearly not in my case, and if I recall correctly from the past GE tends to leave quite a lot of ASR files for previous map versions on the device either (which actually reminds me to check this as well).

And mine neither. Without having any particular reason for doing so, I checked the 'map maps' tab of my nuvi 3598 to find (as expected) only the previous map update comprising North, South and the 3D elements. It was only upon completion of the update and repeating the same checks that I discovered that elements (tiles) of the earlier maps still remained which were only removable using Map Install.
Perhaps it's a combination of the Windows version used (mine v7) and/or the particular GPS device. Who knows, but I still maintain that Garmin should.
  • gets even stranger in my case. Updated the maps yesterday 590 AND pc in options. Received the message that all was installed correctly, however no ntu 2018.10 on my pc. When I open BC with the 590 connected, BC is asking me whether I want to continue using the map on my gps or the one in BC. Choosing the one in BC only gives me the global map. The ntu 2018.10 does not show in the hidden Garmin/Maps folder. Trying to (re-install the map always fails.

The problem with installing the City Navigator Europe NTU 2018.10 mapping to the computer has already been reported and we are investigating this. This thread will be updated when we have more information.

  • Lisa, I uninstalled GE in wiindows (control panel - programs - Garmin Express - uninstall) and reinstalled it from the Garmin site. Same result. Then I used revo uninstaller to uninstall GE, reinstalled it and ran the install maps on pc. Worked just fine, maps are installed. Apparently GE leaves some info in the registry which is not being deleted when uninstalling through windows. Revo uninstaller cleans up the registry as well which solved the problem.
  • I have received notification that this should be resolved. Please try the install to the computer again.
