920xt garmin express "there was an error syncing with garmin connect"

I have 920xt on latest firmware

garmin express has recently started saying "there was an error syncing with garmin connect"
no data is uploaded to garmin connect. but all files seem fine if accessed as a mass storage device
the last firmware update was downloaded ok
I really have done a factory reset (and lost all my settings)
I only have the stryd IQ field

I have other garmin devices which sync fine on the same PC with garmin express.

help appreciated.
  • You say you did a factory reset, but want to make sure, as there are different types of resets.

    • Power off the device
    • Press and hold UP ARROW BUTTON and DOWN ARROW BUTTON
    • Press but don’t hold the POWER BUTTON for a second or so – device should turn on
    • Wait for 1st beep then release UP ARROW BUTTON
    • Wait for 2nd beep then release DOWN ARROW BUTTON


    This takes a bit of dexterity, but should wipe everything and get your 920XT to "day one, out of the box" condition.

    And I, also deleted device from Garmin Express but I can not upload any activity using USB.
    UPDATE: just uninstall GE and reinstall last version, it works for me and others. Thanks to HEYYOUOVERTHERE from thread "Garmin Express not syncing".

    but I had just tried that a few hours ago...same problem

    it did install a slightly newer version

    I think it happened in the last firmware update...around about that time

    might try another pc next as it is mildly annoying

    235 works. not the 920
  • Forgot to mention. After reinstalling GE I rebooted 920xt device. Then I connected to PC and added device (also my Garmin Swim that had no connection problems previously)

    ok sorted !

    Reinstalling Garmin Express REQUIRED me to choose the option "delete all local files"

    THEN it worked.

    there was also an error previously saying "problem with usb device" - or something similar to that.

    THAT has been fixed too.
