Map update not installing on sat nav nuvi 2599

Good morning, I am having a problem installing map update 2017.30 (7.66GB). At first I thought it was because my 2GB microSD card was too small and that the device memory only has 200MB left so I bought a new 8GB card (I understand that that's the largest that the device will take). The device has recognised the new card and said that it would install the update to the new card. But it has again failed several times - I'm guessing because even an 8GB card doesn't actually have 8GB available storage. I guess my question is how can there be an update that is so big that it won't fit either onto the device or onto the maximum size memory card available...?

The device is working fine, but it bothers me that there's an update that I can't access and wonder whether this will now block me having any future updates?

I would be grateful for any advice.

Thank you

Cath
  • First, your device will take up to a 32Gb card and the map files themselves for CN EU 2017.30 are just over 4Gb, so 8Gb should be fine, althouigh your 2Gb would not have been.

The real issue is probably the 200Mb space left on the device so the first step is to remove any unwanted voice, keyboard, text, vehicle and help files. Once you've done that try the update again. If it still fails come back and explain why you think it's failing and what is happening, including any error messages you are getting?

Thank you for your quick reply. I have deleted all possible files, as you have suggested, and there is now just over 300 MB free on the device. I have tried to twice more to update again but it has failed again, after a few minutes. I have attached screenshots that I took earlier this morning, which shows that it recognises the SD card and states that the update is over 7GB. (Last screenshot to follow.)

Is there a way of doing a factory reset and simply installing everything from scratch…?

    Many thanks

Just a quick further update: I've tried installing the update with both the new, empty 8GB SD card in the device and also copying onto it the files that were on the old 2GB card (only 388 MB: makes me wonder if the device is storing files appropriately if the internal memory was almost full with leaving more than 1GB on the SD card...?)

    Thanks

  • While the update is over 7Gb the map files are just over 4Gb, the other files will be installed to the device and replace files already there. Only the map files are installed to the card.

Can you confirm the card is formatted FAT32? If not format it and try again. If it is then ensure the card is empty, also ensure Express is up to date, latest version is 5.1.1 and try again.

Thank you for your reply. The SD card was already formatted to FAT32 but I have re-formatted it (using full format rather than quick format). I've checked that Garmin Express is version 5.1.1. - it was. Have tried the update again but it's failed in the same way.

  • Try going to C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map and deleting the files there. It's possible that with the various failed attempts a partial file is preventing a clean install. Once you've done so try again.

Good morning, I've tried doing this twice and both times it's started out well (showing 2 hrs for the update) but has failed with about 15 minutes to go. I've looked at the SD card afterwards and it's still empty (and there's still 300 MB on the device).

  • Then you'll probably need to call Product Support for detailed troubleshooting of your system.

Thank you for your help with this, I'll do that. (FYI, I've also tried a 32 GB card and that hasn't worked either.)

    Best wishes
