Installation requirements

Trying to install a new map on an Edge 820 but the installations fails in Express with no detail why.

The map is about 4GB according to Garmin and there is (not much) more than this on the unit available as well as on the PC. Unit has about 5GB of 16GB open. PC, at least 10GB.

Two questions please;

1. What is the minimum space required on both the PC and unit to install a new map of about 4GB?

2. How can one uninstall a map on an 820 if more space is needed?
  • I can't answer your questions directly however what I can tell you is that I had a few issues installing maps on my Nuvi because I was doing it on a laptop and the USB ports would go into sleep mode. Express, of course, says "we'll take it from here" but that didn't work. I had to temporarily stop all energy saving features on my laptop before it would upgrade maps successfully.

    I would say that 5 GB available when you need 4 GB sounds tight but I would think it should be enough.

    Thanks Phil,

    It installed the update to the European Cycling map no problem and that was 6GB. But it first deleted the old files and then rebuilt them.

    Another thread here seems to indicated one cannot have two cycling maps installed at the same time but that just sounds crazy. Especially as Garmin was quite happy to sell the US map to me.

    Definitely an issue with the 820. I successfully installed the same map with the same PC, etc. on a Nuvi.

    Eventually gave up and used the open maps.

    Now to get Garmin to give me a refund.... 😠
