Strange update notice in version 4.5.0.0

I have the latest version 4.5.0.0 and when I click on garmin express the startup screen shows in blue that I have 2 updates for my driveluxe 50 and my 2 nuvi 3597s. I click on any 3 of these units and at top it says You're up to date! but shows install in blue and when I click on view details it shows 2 region audio files for TTS3 VE,Mandarin Chinese andTTS3 VE, Taiwanese. Why are these being offered on main page? I use English files and think this should not be offered on main startup page. But the main question is if it says I am up to date why are these being offered. I think this is maybe a problem with version 4.5.0.0.

  • I am seeing the same issue on my 3597LMTHD (North America model with English). These updates did not show up when 4.5.0.0 was first installed, but do show up now. I suspect this is an error on the Garmin server end in how the updates have been tagged to be targeted to specific devices. I am going to just ignore these updates as I only use English language files.
  • I went to voices installed on my driveluxe 50 and deleted every voice except the two English voices installed and restarted my unit then turned it off and hooked up to computer and garmin express version 4.5.0.0 and still got those 2 voice update region files like before. I think this should not happen especially after deleting those other voice files that were installed on this unit. I called customer support for automotive products and they told me this was done this way because webupdater was removed on the garmin website. I still think this is wrong the way garmin express is showing these two updates on the main start up page on express. These should be under tools and content optional updates. I do not want to see 2 updates circled in blue every time starting up garmin express. Just my opinion but this is annoying.:(

  • I agree with you JerryBigJ. It also makes no sense to Show "You are up to date" then enable the Install button for 2 updates you don't want or need.

Also, Webupdater is still there: http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp. I just went to the Garmin site and put Webupdater in the search to find the link.
  • ADBUCK you are right about searching for WebUpdater on garmins site but they took it off the main download page just like they took MapSource off but you can still get legacy version of MapSource by searching for MapSource also.:D

  • Garmin Express v5.0.0.0 ... problem not fixed.

Garmin Express 5.0.0.0 is out, but unfortunately did not fix this problem of the unwanted Chinese voice files. The 2 updates still show up in 5.0.0.0:mad:
  • ADBUCK I installed 5.0.0.0 and then removed my driveluxe 50 from garmin express then restarted computer started garmin express and reinstalled my driveluxe 50 which now has only 2 English voice and it still says up to date with those unwanted Chinese voice files. Why do they insist on doing this as this should be under tools & content optional updates?

  • Thanks JerryBigJ! I will give it a try! Sadly ... got the same results as you ... still showing the two unwanted updates.
  • This is even worse than it seems. A user in another forum has reported that Express installs these two voices even if you don't select them. He has a nuvi 3597LMTHD, and it was showing 3 updates ... the two Chinese voices and an update for Traffic Text. He wanted the Traffic Text update but not the Chinese voices. So instead of clicking on "Install All", he selected "Show Details", then clicked the "Install" button for only the Traffic Text update. After the update was complete, Express showed that his nuvi was up to date with no updates available ... seemed like he had cleared the unwanted Chinese voices from the Express window. But upon checking his nuvi, Express had installed the 2 Chinese voices even though he only clicked the "Install" button by the Traffic Text update. So he had to go in and manually delete the two voice files. And of course after that, Express shows the two updates again.

So it seems that Garmin Express is insistent in having the two Chinese language voices installed on our devices whether we select them or not.
  • He possibly did select them even though he thought he hadn't. I've just selected the updates I wanted and didn't get the Chinese voices.
  • Maybe, but he tried it on a second device and got the same results. In any case, Garmin should remove these as required updates.

Edit: I just tested this on a clone of my 3597 using data from a backup taken before the Traffic Text update was applied. I was careful to select only the Traffic Text Install and not the 2 voices, but Express did put the two voice files on my cloned device in addition to the Traffic Text update. So I can confirm the Express behavior, at least on the 3597 nuvi. Maybe it behaves differently on another model.
