Garmin Express Does Not Recognize SD Card

Hi all, new to this forum but not to Garmin. For quite awhile now I have been having a problem updating my Nuvi 50. When I plug it in it shows connected and says I have a map update. I tell it to update and it goes to "Preparing Device" for a few minutes. Then it tells me that it needs to be put on an SD card and that I need to install one. There is already one installed and has been for probably over a year now.

If I hook the Nuvi up to my wife's computer with Garmin Express the update goes normal. This indicates to me that it is not the Nuvi but something about MY computer. Possibly a corrupt file or something. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Express a couple of times with REVO uninstall and have done a search for everything containing Garmin and deleted them but still have the problem.

I know I can just continue to update it with my wife's computer but it is driving me crazy on why it won't work on my computer. Any help is appreciated. CC

This sounds like it could help my problem but have you or anyone done this yet? Sounds a little drastic and I don't want to create any bigger problems than what I already have. Thanks again. CC

I've not done it as I've never needed to, but I've seen others report that it resolved the issue for them.

Thanks again for the help. I tried the procedure as you suggested and it went as advertised. The only problem is that it did not fix my problem. The Nuvi still does not recognize my SD card. Any other ideas are greatly appreciated. CC

Well the only other thing I can think of, given that it all works on your wife's PC and you're presumably using the same cable (?) is that you're connecting through a USB hub as this sometimes cases issues. Front USB ports on a PC are often wired off a hub, does the issue still occur if you connect to a rear USB port on your PC?

I am using the same cable. I don't have any ports on the back of my laptop and I am plugging it into the same location on my computer as on her's. We have the same laptops bought at the same time.

If you have the same hardware, you can verify that there is nothing wrong with your laptop's hardware. Depending on the manufacturer, if you haven't changed the partitioning on your hard drive, there should be a diagnostic partition that will run a test before it boots into the operating system. For example, if it's a Dell, tap the F12 key while powering on, then select the Diagnostics option. If you do the full test, it could take several hours.

If the full diagnostic test comes up clean, you can start looking into it being a software issue, which is not quite so easy.
