New device 2599 Internal Storage almost full

Hi,
I bought a new Garmin Nuvi 2599 yesterday, and connected it to my PC to update files.

After about 3 hours it just seemed to hang.

So I quit the update and when I used Windows Explorer to look at the device it shows 323 MB free of 7.02 GM

Do I have to install an SD card before I can update the device when new? This is not mentioned anywhere in the manual.

So using Windows Explorer I checked for the total file size of each sub-folder on the device and the total comes to less than 1 GB.

Any idea why the device is showing up as almost full, and how to fix it?

The large files are in a hidden system folder. As to whether what you're seeing is normal it depends on which map your device came with.

You may very well need a card, just like many electronic devices do, eg most cameras, phones.
