Sync error on Forerunner 205

My wife's F205 used to work fine with Garmin Express, but now it gets a sync error and no activities are uploaded to connect.
I have tried the following:
  • Windows 7 Pro 64 and Windows 10 Home (excl Anniversary update) PCs
  • Different USB cables
  • Different USB ports, including via 2.0 Hub
  • Uninstall/Re-install Garmin Express
  • deleting some of the older activities on the device, leaving only a few runs on it
  • contacting Garmin Support (No answer as yet)

The device is not visible as a Mass Storage device, so I cannot upload manually.
There are no software updates outstanding (or so GExpress tells me)
The device works fine "offline"
The logfiles found in c:\ProgramData\Garmin\Logs tell of various issues, (these have been sent to Support for their attention)

Anyone else hitting sync issues with older Garmin devices?

Frustrated that new software does not seem to support older devices. :(

I have a Forerunner 405CX and it works, so I assume that it is a software installation problem.
If you want to test you could install only "Ant Agent" and sync your track.
However, if you are going to do it before you should uninstall all garmin software.
With Revouninstaller you can uninstall all garmin software and the Garmin USB driver.

One of the things I tried was a re-installation of the software, including driver...

Interesting: When I tried to sync my own Edge500 Cycle device, I also got a sync error, but this time Express suggested that there was an invalid file on the device that I might want to remove; viz.
    \Garmin\Diag\Shutdowns\Shutdown.log
When I removed that from the Edge500 using Windows Explorer to find it on the Mass Media view of the device, then the Sync process worked fine... However I cannot see the FR205 in "Mass media" mode, so cannot check if this is the problem on that device... any ideas?

I've had the exact opposite experience with my 405CX; I've never been able to upload successfully except when I used the manual feature in the classic Garmin Connect. Now that it's gone, I can't upload at all (I see "transferring data", and the bar moves, but I never get a 'transfer complete' indication and nothing shows up in Connect). Frankly I came to the forums expecting to see an announcement to the effect of "Forerunner 405CX no longer supported"
