Garmin Express won't open

The application won't respond whatsoever. I double click on the shortcut, the computer thinks for a second, then nothing. I'm running Windows 10, and I think there was some sort of update a few days ago. I've tried uninstalling, restarting, and then downloading and reinstalling the program, but nothing works. I'm completely at a loss. Any ideas?
  • Deactivate .NET 4.6 Windows Component

Hello, I had the same problem. Windows Event viewer showed problem with .NET framework. I deactivated .NET 4.6 Framework Windows component, then reinstalled Garmin Express and GE during installation requested installation .NET 3.5 Component. I installed it and now GE works fine.
  • Mine stopped working last night on my home laptop running windows10, tried disabling .net and reinstalling.... no success....

I guess I just need to hope for an update or something...

I'm not familiar with Windows Event Viewer or how to deactivate the .Net Framework. Is there any chance you might be able to explain that, or link a page that might help me? I've looked around a bit, but can't find anything clear. Thanks.
  • Open "Control Panel" in Windows. Win 7 has it on the Start menu. Win 10, you may have to press the Windows key then start typing "control panel"; it will show up in the list. After you get to Control Panel, select "Programs and Features". On the left, there will be a menu item for "Turn Windows features on or off". Click that and a popup box will display with a list of stuff. Uncheck the .Net items, which are at the top on mine and click OK.

Hope this helps you. It did NOTHING for me! :p
  • Hey Garmin!

Are there any Garmin Support people reading these boards???

If so, you people really need to get on top of the Garmin Express issue! Mine used to work even on Windows 10 up until around the 4.1.27.0 update. I don't really know what broke it, the Garmin update or a Windoze update, but we need some help here. Even if it's Microsoft's fault, you guys need to find a way to deal with it or a workaround. AND, the 4.1.28.0 update does nothing, also.

I may have a post count barely above zero, but I have worked in software engineering and later IT for a length of time measured in decades. This kind of thing would have had people fired or working 24/7 at some companies. Sure no ones life is depending on the Garmin activity trackers, but Garmin, you have a good reputation; that's why I picked you over Fitbit. Let's keep it up, please!

Thank you! <now stepping off of soapbox>
  • Mine has always worked in Win7 and Win10, so I suspect the issue is with your system. Diagnosing what over a forum is nigh on impossible, particularly as you haven't given much to go on, so call Product Support for help.

Try to run it in compatibility mode (win8).
  • I was running it without problem on Windows 10 for some time. I believe it was around the time of a Windows update that the program quit working. The thing that has me weirded out is that this seems to be the only program effected. Everything else on my system runs fine. I don't get it.
  • It's running for me again now. I got the latest update for Garmin Express, installed it, and it worked fine. My guess a Windows 10 update messed with something and it took them a while to get a fix out. Shame it took them so long, but I'm quite happy it's back up.
  • There were some Windows updates in the last 24-48 hours that my PC picked up. Took your idea to try to reinstall, but no luck!
