Incompatible Card Root Cause

Garmin Express running on the latest Windows 10 64 bit O/S would not update my NUVI 1250T w/4 GB SD formatted FAT, which updated fine in March. I copied the files and folders to a hard drive folder just in case I wanted to go back. Then I did a quick format to FAT32, and retried, and it updated OK. So, either Garmin Express PC hates FAT (demands FAT32) or requires an empty disk.

Someone with a FAT SD try emptying the disk first, so we can narrow it down!

Online help says FAT is OK! https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7B7d3c74d0-6b61-11e2-65d0-000000000000%7D => support.garmin.com/.../case.faces Someone should update that, if FAT32 is needed, and also update Garmin Express to actually express what is bothering it!
  • Actually it doesn't. It says cards larger than 2Gb, so the 4Gb card you mention, should be formatted FAT32.

Root Cause Fixed means no forum messages, no support email!

The article is poorly written, starting out that paragraph saying "Format the microSD/SD card to the FAT or FAT32 format."

Somewhere in 2016, Garmin arbitrarily made the 4GB FAT illegal, when it was fine in March. If fat32 saves a tiny bit of space, it was nowhere near full. You support the FAT at 2Gb, so the software is in there, the developer made a mistake in ruling this "Incompatible" and nobody pushed back hard enough, anticipating the problems it creates.

If the information from Garmin Express or the support page google found was clear, I would not be writing forum entries and support emails. Hopefully, Google will find this article, so it will help many others, saving Garmin tons of costs. However, Garmin can fix the message so it is clear how to fix, or even better, fix the code so it stops attacking 4gb FAT users. Then it saves you from supporting those not wise enough to google it.
  • This issue has been resolved with the release yesterday of Garmin Express 4.1.27.0. The installer can be downloaded from here:
