Windows 10 Anniversary Release (Build 14393.5)

I'm not sure how many other people is affected, I do know that my Forerunner 235 and another report of the Fenix 3 HR will not mount correctly as a USB Drive on the latest and upcoming Windows 10 build.

Not mounting correctly stops Garmin Express from accessing the device to configure/update.

Is Garmin Tech aware of this issue?

    Same issue here

I seem to be having the same issue, but this issue is across 2 devices and on 2 computers.

    - Two computers running builds 14393.0 & 14393.5
    - Two different devices Vivosmart HR & Edge 520

Note** Device Manager will see the 520 but will not connect with express nor can I access the internal memory of the 520 via explorer.

I had been receiving a strange error message upon connection "Insert Disk in to drive ..." when connecting the the 520 or the Vivosmart but now with the update to 14393.5 this has vanished. I have tried all suggestions via Garmin website, rebooting, reinstalling, USB drivers uninstall/re-install, cables etc. I have also tried solutions on windows side with SFC /SCANNOW and rolling back drivers
I would also like to note that I have no other issues with any other USB devices, only my Garmins...

PS - before these updates everything had been running smoothly.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, this is the first report we have had of this hardware communication issue. In order to look into this further, we would like some additional information.

Were the computers upgraded from a previous Windows version to the Anniversary build? If so, what was the previous version? Or are they brand new computers that were pre-loaded with this OS?

What happens when you connect other non-Garmin devices, external hard drives or thumb drives, SD cards?

How are the devices displayed in Device Manager and Disk Management? Would you be able to provide screenshots of the properties in Device Manager and Disk Management?

We will start looking into this but the above information would be extremely helpful. If it would be easier, you can call Product Support, one of our agents could help gather this information.

Seeing the same with my FR15 since 14393.3 We should be close to RTM so really concerned this just started happening so late in the Windows AU process. Anyhow, express will not see the FR15 anymore. It adds a USB drive letter, but it isn't accessible using file explorer. I have no issues with usb thumb sticks or my phone, just having issues with the Garmin watch being seen by Express now

I've been running Windows 10 since last year, then just started running the AU builds for a couple months. No problems until 14393.3 and continuing with .5 release

Edit: I tried several times to upload some small jpeg files but I keep getting the red ! with no explanation to why they didn't upload

I tried removing my device from Express, but now I can't add it back any more of course. I also tried uninstalling Garmin Express and reloading, but it still doesn't see my FR15. I brought my FR15 over to my wife's computer which is still running Win 10 and Garmin Express sees it fine there. So, it's just an issues with Express using the latest couple Anniversary Update releases.
  • I have this situation with Fenix 3 HR too. If any debugging is needed I can be contacted for more details. Both of my computers were upgraded from previous anniversary update release to the current one. Watch is visible as a disk drive after connecting the USB cable but when trying to access the disk OS prompts to insert a disk into the drive. One of the computer displays error message "The directory name is invalid" when the watch is attached to the computer.

I have also reported this to Microsoft's insider program.
  • Saw exactly the same. I'm on the slow ring and after updating to 14393 I could no longer see my FR235 or my Fenix 3HR. Same error: directory name invalid and format drive. Tried various things: removing and reinstalling usb drivers, different usb ports, etc. Had no problem connecting a thumb drive. After reverting back to 14388 the issue was resolved. I'm not sure if this is a Garmin Connect issue since the watch itself as a storage device seems inaccessible.. My pc was also upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 10 to current version.

Glad I found this thread. I was starting to get worried something was wrong with my gear.

Running Windows 14393.0 on the windows insider slow ring. Was on a previous build of Windows 10 insider preview, but not sure what the version number was. Watch is a Fenix 3. When I plug in the watch, it mounts it as a drive letter(D:\), but it cannot be accessed. In device manager, it shows the watch under Disk Drives as "Garmin fenix3 FLASH USB Device". The Drivers it is using include:
    disk.sys at 10.0.14933.0 (rs1_release.1607151616)
    EhStorClass.sys
    partmgr.sys

all three are at version 10.0.14933.0 (rs1_release.1607151616)

Also ran Diskpart and got info on how the disk and vol is looking on the drive. I took screen shots of all of them, but they are failing to upload though the file upload manager. If you guys have an email addresses I can send to, I can email them direct.

Please let me know if you need any more info. Would not mind testing out on this rig.

    Please see answers below

Were the computers upgraded from a previous Windows version to the Anniversary build? If so, what was the previous version? Or are they brand new computers that were pre-loaded with this OS?

These computers had been upgraded from 8.1 Pro a year ago and both computers have been in the insider program on "slow". One computer is now on the "Release Preview - 14393.0" and the other is still on "slow - 14393.5". The previous build had been 14388 for both computers.

What happens when you connect other non-Garmin devices, external hard drives or thumb drives, SD cards?

All other USB devices normally connected and/or connected when needed (Flash Drives, Hard Drives, Graphics Tablet, and Camera) are working as expected

How are the devices displayed in Device Manager and Disk Management? Would you be able to provide screenshots of the properties in Device Manager and Disk Management?

Glad to hear that this is being worked on. I just want to confirm that I have the same issue with my Forerunner 15 and it started with Windows 10 inside build 14393. Watch is seen correctly on other Windows 10 machines not running preview build.
