nüvi 56LM map update taking too long

I have a nüvi 56LM and Express has been updating the maps for the last 26 hours. The app says Step 2 of 2: Updating Maps. Underneath the progress bar is the text "Downloading Files...". The progress bar is only a quarter complete but it is still making tiny bits of progress. If I put a post-it note on the end of the progress bar it will advance one pixel width after, oh say, four to six hours or so. The top of the Express app shows my device is connected and it has full use of my internet (DSL) connection. It's not like I'm streaming Netflix or anything like that.

Windows 7 64-bit, 10GB RAM, 279GB HD

nüvi 56 has a microSD card installed but I don't remember what size.

Can I interrupt the map update with damaging anything? How can I fix this?

I'm extremely disappointed in the Express application. A previous map update took way too long to download but not nearly this bad.

Thanks,
Andrew

I am sorry you are having trouble updating maps. This issue is often caused because the internet connection is unstable. If the connection drops at any moment, Garmin Express will check the previous data to ensure it didn't get messed up. So on an unstable connection, it is actually checking the same data over and over making the download very slow. Most map updates can be completed in 1 - 2 hours. So, there is definitely a problem with this connection. Please try the FAQ, "">Issues downloading updates in Garmin Express">Issues downloading updates in Garmin Express"

To answer your question, if it is still "Downloading" then interrupting it will not hurt anything. If it is "Installing" then the most it will do is delete your maps and you would just have to run the update again to completion. I recommend cancelling the download, using the FAQ I provided, and then trying the update again.

Let us know if you still have trouble.

same problem here, using windows 10 64-bit, My connection is stable, I monitor it and check upload and download speed, connection is right on. .5 meg per second. by the way I do not have any problem with any other downloads. why only garmin express? I checked fire wall, no problem there. plenty of ram . it appears to me that garmin is bottlenecking bandwith, depending on how many people are downloading. this needs to be fixed and stop dodging the issue. this has wasted many days of my time. I have gone through all of the suggestions I can find. nothing has solved this problem. getting about time to try some other gps's. garmin is getting outdated rapidly. yah they give you lifetime maps and it takes a lifetime to download them.

  • The issue invariably when this comes up is something that isn't to do with Garmin.  I've been updating maps on Garmin devices for over 10 years and never had a slow download. If you're sure it's not your ISP throttling the download call Product Support for detailed help.
