Windows 7 C drive nearly full, can I change where Garmin Express save whilst updating

Hi

Untill I get round to upgrading my C: drive to a bigger one, is it possible to change where Garmin Express stores map files whist it is updating maps?

Thanks in advance.

I am sorry you are having trouble fitting the map update files on your "C:" drive. Unfortunately, the program will always save data into your hidden "ProgramData" folder.

Garmin Express stores your previous updates on the computer (in case you need to reinstall). If you have run a map update previously, we can check to see if old data is still there and remove it. Please try the following if you have updated maps with this computer before:
    • Press the Windows key + "R" to open the "Run" command. (The Windows key is two keys left of the spacebar.)
    • Type in %programdata%\garmin\coreservice\downloads\map and press "Enter".
    • Here it will list the different maps downloaded. Please delete any of them that you are done with.

If you need more free space, we suggest moving large files such as music, pictures, and videos to another storage medium like a CD/DVD/ flash drive, etc.

Let us know if you have more questions.

  • As often as this complaint has come up, why don't you fix it Garmin? It can't be that hard to allow the user an option to specify an alternate location for your "work/staging drive and folder" when installing maps. C'mon, give us a break and fix this.

The "ProgramData" is used for a specific reason. This folder replaced the “All Users” folder from previous versions of Windows. It is designed so any user that logs on to the computer is able to access this data. If the data was stored in a different location, when another user logged into the computer they would not be able to access it. They would have to download the same data again (leaving two copies on the computer) in order for the second user to have it. This can cause confusion, waste a lot of time, and use up way more memory (especially if there are multiple users on the same computer).

I understand with smaller hard drives that you may want to save the data elsewhere. If you think this function should be added to Garmin Express, please enter the recommendation on our ">Garmin Ideas">Garmin Ideas site.
All suggestions here are read by Garmin designers. We cannot promise a suggestion will be used, but if many people have the same idea then it is more likely to be implemented.

    Hopefully this information helps.

  • Thanks, I do appreciate the explanation Dave, although I still believe this common complaint could be easily resolved with a little programming effort in Garmin Express. I also appreciate the invitation to post to the Garmin idea site, although I have little faith that anyone at Garmin pays much attention to what gets posted there. Sorry for the cynicism.
