Garmin Express fail, fail,fail ...

Former Member
Former Member
I have two Nuvi 765t units, with lifetime European maps.

I can connect to Express with both, have updated the software, have fitted new, 8gb FAT32 formatted SD cards, but the map updates complete but fail to function. I have reinstalled the maps to no avail. Express now reports the units as having up to date maps, but one unit says "no data", and the other crashes and turns off about 10% into loading up the map on start up (and if plugged in, turns on, crashes, turns on, crashes....)

Updates in the past from the Dashboard were slow but at least worked.

I have been trying for 3 days now! I *was* considering buying a Zumo for my motorcycle touring ....
  • Your forum name makes me think you're in UK?

I assume therefore you're trying to update to the latest CN EU 2017.10 NT map? I don't think your device has enough memory to install the full map so you will need to use Express to install the map to your PC then use MapInstall to send the maps to your SD card.

Note Express will report maps as up to date if it's sent them to your devices, it cannot check to ensure they're installed correctly. Note also that your device is one that doesn't allow download to a card, see this FAQ, and it has more detailed instructions to enable you to do what I described briefly above:

That's very strange because the 2015 maps downloaded last year onto a 4gb SD card! Your link also does NOT identify the 765t as needing this workaround.

I have been using new 8gb cards this time, to no avail.

I shall follow your advice, and see how we go.
  • My error, for some reason I read an eight instead of a seven! Apologies for the confusion. However no harm in trying what I suggested to see if that will install the maps for you.

I am sorry you are having trouble updating your nuvi 765T devices. It seems you have two issues actually happening here. First, we need to deal with the device that is power cycling before it completely turns on. Please try the following:
    • With the device connected to the PC, press the Windows key + "E". (The Windows key is two keys left of the spacebar.)
    • Open the Garmin drive and the "Garmin" folder.
    • Look for a file called "GUPDATE.GCD" and delete it.
Now, disconnect the device and see if it turns on correctly.

Now, we need to correct the map problem. To do this, we need to reinstall the maps and make sure we "Safely Remove"/'Eject" the nuvi 765T before it is unplugged. Please try the FAQ, "How do I reinstall maps or change coverage using Garmin Express?"
Once the reinstall is finished, please do the following before you unplug your device:
    • Press the "Windows key" + "E".
    • Right-click the Garmin device.
    • Click "Eject". (If there is no Eject option, the device does not need to be ejected.)
Once the drive disappears or it says it is 'safe to remove', then you can unplug the device.

The devices should now power up and be able to use the current maps.

Let us know if you have more trouble.
