Unable to see downloaded UK Ireland map purchased online from Garmin

I have a Garmin Nuvi 42 LM that I purchased in Europe last year preloaded with maps for Southern Europe.

I went online to Garmin site, logged in and purchased map for UK and Ireland (City Navigator® Europe NT: U.K. and Ireland). I used Internet Explorer with the necessary Communicator Plugin to log in and download the map. The map downloaded but I cannot see it either on my device or on Garmin Express (or MapInstaller or Basecamp)

I have plenty of space on my Garmin Device (almost 2 GB and the map is only 351 MB) – so I tried first downloading on the device. Later, I inserted a micro SD card to the device and tried downloading on the card as well. Both times I got a message that download is complete. And I can see the files (D0391300A.img, D0391300A.gma, D0391300A.unl) downloaded to the /Garmin folder in my device

However I cannot see the map either in the device or in Garmin Express. Do I have to do anything further in order to be able to see the maps?
  • As that map is part of CN EU I'm not sure you'll see it listed separately. In any case note that a downloaded supplemental map won't show in BaseCamp.

    Try zooming into the map in UK, that will show you if it's correctly installed or not.

    I am pretty sure it is not installed because when i try to change country to UK and enter an address, I can see that it does not have any data

    Also Map->Info shows me
    CN Europe NTU 2017.10
    [1] Southern Europe


    I think once I am able to install the UK map successfully, it should probably show up an additional line
    [2] UK and Ireland
  • Ak OK, that changes things slightly. I've just noticed you say the files are in the Garmin folder on your device? They should be in a folder named Map, but in Garmin if on the SD card. You also say you purchased the NT map but your device has the NTU map? I'm not sure if that would cause an issue.

    Otherwise I can't see what else could be wrong, but the Express team here will be able to look at your account for you and advise further.

    I am sorry you are having trouble downloading the "City Navigator Europe NT: U.K. and Ireland" map. It will list these maps as a separate entry on the nuvi 42LM. These maps won't show up in Garmin Express, MapInstall, or BaseCamp. To clarify, devices that use "NTU" mapping can read "NT" mapping but not the other way around.

    If the download says complete but you have no maps, most likely the computer is caching data and saying it is done when it is not. Just unplugging the device can cut off part of the data and prevent the maps from working. To correct this, we need to "Safely Remove" the device from the computer before it is unplugged. Please try the following:
    • Make sure the device is plugged into USB 2 ports if possible. USB 3 ports can sometimes send too much data at one time.
    • Run the download again.
    • When complete, click on "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" in your System Tray (the icons by the computer's clock).
    • Select the device.
    • Wait for the computer to say it is safe to remove the device and then unplug it.

    The Europe maps should now be installed. Please make sure they are listed and working. Let us know if you still have trouble.

    I have been using the "Safe remove Hardware and Eject Media" option every time after trying the download. Today I also tried with the USB 2.0 port as you suggested. It had no effect - Download is shown to be complete however I cannot see the map on the device.


    However I agree that the download is probably not happening correctly because the size of the D0391300A.img file created in the \Map folder in the device is different each time. Yesterday it was 83851 KB and today it is 93815 KB. I believe the size of the download is supposed to be 351 KB

    I have tried the download over different networks - at home, at work, at a friend's place - over both high speed and slightly lower speed networks. Nothing seems to work

    Can you please suggest what next. I need to travel to UK soon and I need to get the maps operational by then as I will be doing a whole lot of driving

    I'm sorry you are still unable to download the Downloadable Content (DLC) mapping of City Navigator Europe NT - UK & Ireland. I see from your post that you have tried multiple networks. Were they all WiFi networks? Or were any of them Ethernet?

    Since the download is starting, it still seems like an interruption in the internet communication is causing the issue. I have tested the download here and it worked fine, my .img file after transfer to my device is 350 MB and the mapping is detected. This would also indicate that it is some kind of communication issue with the internet network.

    If none of the internet connections you have tried is a high speed Ethernet connection, I recommend trying that. Otherwise, you will need to contact Product Support by phone for more in-depth troubleshooting.

    Thanks Lisa - I tried downloading over an Ethernet connection instead of a WiFi one - and it worked!!!
