My S4 is no longer recognized by Garmin Express. When I plug it into the USB port, Windows wants to reformat the drive. I have done a soft reset and a factory reset. No change.
I am sorry your Approach S4 isn't being detected correctly. The problem you are having isn't with Garmin Express at all. The problem is with the computer connection itself. If the computer is telling you the drive needs to be formatted, it means either the connection between the Approach S4 and the computer is bad or the device has malfunctioned. Please try the following:
If the computer is a laptop, make sure it is plugged into a wall power outlet.
Disconnect all other USB devices from the computer except for the mouse and keyboard.
Plug the device directly into the rear of the computer (or directly into the side for a laptop) bypassing all USB hubs and external devices.
Make sure you are using the "GARMIN" USB data cable. Ours is actually labeled with "GARMIN" on it.
If your computer uses "USB 2.0" ports and "USB 3.0" ports, make sure you are using the "USB 2.0" ports.
Now, please see if the computer detects the device correctly. If it doesn't, please see if another computer can detect the Approach S4 correctly.
If it still asks you to format the device, please call ">Product Support">Product Support.
The problem was solved by allowing windows to Format the drive (use defaults), unplug the S4, wait 10 seconds, plug back in, windows now recognized it. I could then run Garmin express and update the watch.
