760 caper update fail

When I tried to update Lifetime maps to my 760 camper, a lot of data ( 9 - 10 GB) was transferred according to my data usage, but the installer dashboard stuck after a while and nothing was updated. After about 6 hours, no progress had been made.

Where on my laptop are the maps which must have been downloaded so that I can try again? I can't keep downloading that ampount of data to have it fail to instal.

I initially used Chrome but then discovered that it wasn't compatible, although there was no warning flashed up, so tried again with Firefox with the same failure.

I'm using Windows 8.1.

The Garmin Express seems to instal on the laptop OK, but freezes after download and won't instal maps on the device. I have added a 16GB micro SD card as the unit's mamory seemed quite full, but I assume that the maps are renewed rather than added to and that additional memory would not be required?

I am sorry you are having trouble updating the Europe maps on your Camper 760LMT-D. You can't try again by finding the map location. To try updating again, you will still use Garmin Express. It should read the data and continue downloading from where it left off. If you really want to know where it is, the default location is C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map.

If you are limited on data, you are probably not meeting the minimum requirements for Garmin Express. For its internet connection it requires:
    • High speed Internet access (Not for use with dial-up, mobile or satellite connections)
If you are limited on your bandwidth, you are probably using a mobile or satellite connection. If you are using a satellite connection, there is a good possibility this may be the problem. These connections are less stable than land connections and may be losing data. Please try the steps in the FAQ, "">How can Internet connection restrictions prevent me from successfully downloading maps for my Garmin device?">How can Internet connection restrictions prevent me from successfully downloading maps for my Garmin device?"Changing web browsers makes no difference at all. Garmin Express does not use your web browser. You only use the web browser to get the program and that will work fine in Chrome.

As for space, the updated map will replace the previous map on the device. However, as more roads and points of interest get added to the maps, the map file grows in size. It is possible the memory on the device won't be able to hold the maps. If this happens, you can use a microSD card to hold the maps instead. When you do not have a memory card and it is short on free space, Garmin Express will prompt you to use a memory card or choose a smaller region. Since you have a 16GB microSD card in the device, if it is short on space, Garmin Express will tell you it is using the microSD card inside your device.

If you have tried the FAQ mentioned and you still cannot complete the update, please contact ">Garmin Europe Customer Support">Garmin Europe Customer Support. They will be able to determine the cause of the problem more efficiently.

Thank you. My internet connection has worked OK across 3 Garmin products so far, but I take your comment on board.
The space available when I check on the device shows a red bar and 365MB remaining out of 7GB. The installer seems to jam once the download of about 9GB finishes, so isn't the problem with the installer failing to rewrite/overwrite the map and other content?
Or do I need to delete the existing content somehow manually?

    Cheers,
    Ian
  • Given the lack of spare space on your device the card will almost certainly be required. The fact it's not being used points to a possible issue with the card. How much free space is on the card? Is it formatted correctly, it needs to be FAT32. If it's a lockable card ensure the switch is not in the lock position.

It is possible the update is having trouble writing data, but you can't tell by the size you see if it is finished downloading. The only way you will know if it is past that step is by what it says it is doing. There is a message just underneath the progress bar that will tell you what it is doing. If it still says "Downloading", then it is still getting data from our server. There are a couple of other messages you can see, but it is not writing data to the device (or memory card) until it says "Copying".

If you have tried all the previous provided steps, I think we need to view the logs from Garmin Express. I will send you steps in a Private Message on how to send us the Garmin Express logs.
