Nuvi 55LM - device keeps turning off

Hi, just purchased a new Nuvi 55LM and after the initial download - the device now auto turns itself off after 2 mins...

Not only does this make it unusable in the car - it is also making downloading new updates (which it's telling me I have) as the device just turns itself off, even when connected to laptop.

Battery icon saying full.

Had a search and couldn't see anything similar?

(Only other thing which seems to be an issue is I have the email from Garmin saying "thanks for registering your product" yet when I try to login on the Garmin site, it's telling me "email address not recognised")

Appreciate any advice?

Thank you
  • Are you sure it's turning off? There is a setting in Settings, Display called Display Timeout (see page 10 of the manual) ... what is yours set to? From your post I suspect yours is set to 2 minutes, try setting it to Never :)

Hi - indeed the screen setting was set to the 2 mins, so now set to never - and maps worked grand on the (hour) drive home from work.

However, I've plugged into laptop to get the updates, and device still keeps turning off. I'm guessing it has to be on as it's saying the over 3gb update has to go on the memory card? If it isn't on (and showing as "not connected") during the download -"step 2 of 2 - downloading maps" then it isn't going to work~?

I've tried turning it back on, and it then shows as connected for a couple of mins, but just turns itself off again.

Looking through the user guide, it does make mention of "Sleep Mode", but just in relation to when the battery is charging (and isn't really clear, to be honest)

Does the device go into "sleep mode" when updates are downloading? And will the updates work if it is in Sleep mode?

I appreciate your help, thank you

I am sorry your nuvi 55 is disconnecting from the computer. While connected to a computer, the "sleep mode" is disabled. Anytime this device disconnects from a computer, it will shut off. So, what is happening is the computer is disconnecting the device (even though it is plugged in). Often, this is because the computer's USB ports aren't providing enough power to maintain the connection. Please try the following:
    • Disconnect all other USB devices (except the mouse and keyboard) from the computer.
    • If you are using a laptop, make sure the laptop is plugged into a wall power outlet.
    • Connect the device directly to the back of the computer if it is a desktop or directly to the side if it is a laptop.
      • Avoid using any USB hubs or other external devices to connect the nuvi.
      • Only use the "GARMIN" USB data cable.

    • If your computer uses USB 2 and USB 3 ports, please use the USB 2 ports as well.

Now, please see if the device will stay connected. Let us know if the nuvi 55 still disconnects.

    Hi Dave,

    Thanks for this.

Laptop has x3 usb ports - tried them all - and then tried them all with a different usb cable and still the same issue (Laptop connected to mains power)

I tried connection and transfering some files from a camera via each usb port, and all working fine.

    I'm running Windows 7

    I appreciate your help
  • When you say it turns off does it not still show in Windows Explorer?

Have you tried setting it to mass storage mode? Does that change anything? To do so:

    1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
    2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
    3. The Developers Screen will pop up
(may see Configuration and Settings, if so select it)
    4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
    5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
    6. Shut down NUVI and connect to PC
    7. It should now connect in mass storage mode.

As an alternative to step 1 and 2 above, you can bring up the Nuvi's "trip information" screen by tapping the speed icon, then press and hold the speedometer for about 10 seconds to access the developer screen. Now go from step 3.

No, it turns itself off and disappears from Explorer - and shows as unconnected on Garmin Express. Turning it back on, it shows up on explorer (as Nuvi 55 - and I can see the extra storage mem card) and it shows up on Garmin Express as connected - but will only stay that way for about a min.

I'll give both these a go when I get home, and update here. (I downloaded the Garmin USB drivers from here - but that hasn't made a difference unfortunately)

This sorted everything for me - many thanks!
