3490 Euro Map date different from Express

Former Member
Former Member
Good day All,

I have updated my Life Time Maps to the latest version on the 3490. Express indicates that the update was successful and indicates the dates correctly, NT Europe at 2016.20, but my unit (3490) still shows NT Europe at 2014.10. I have run the upgrade several times with the exact same result. Do I have the new maps installed? Why does the date not change for Europe? The North America maps do show the right date in both places Express and 3490.

Thanks in advance

I am sorry you are having trouble updating the Europe maps on your nuvi 3490. When looking at the maps, you should go by the device. It is going to know the exact maps being used. On the device's "myMaps" page, please check the entire list of maps because it is possible it could list two copies of Europe maps.

Most likely though, the new maps did not get copied to the device. I would recommend running Garmin Express again and choose to reinstall the Europe maps. When it is complete, you may need to leave the device connected for an extra 30 minutes to ensure it is actually finished writing to the device. Then unplug it and check the maps.

Let us know if you still have trouble. If you do, can you tell us what is the device's serial number and do you get any error messages?

    Hi Dave,

Thank you for your response. I appreciate the help.

I reinstalled the Europe map (CN Europe NT 2016.20) with Garmin Express and Garmin Express went to a successful completion and informed me I was up to date. However when I look in myMaps on the Device (3490) it show CN Europe NT 2014.10 installed and no other Europe map. The North America NT map is at 2017.10 and is in sync with Garmin Express.
I believe I saw some message about not having space left on the device's memory, which is correct, but the Europe map is installed on the SD card. Is it possible that Garmin Express does not see the card?
The serial number of the device is: 2B7048007
    Im in Canada.
At one point I got a message stating that this map could not be loaded by Garmin Express and to use Garmin Maps Install. I tried that but ran into other issues not being able to unlock my maps online.

    Any help, would be appreciated.

    Regards
    Lino
  • I'm slightly confused here but if your current map is 2014.10 and you're trying to update to 2016.20 you may not be able to, the Terms and Conditions for Lifetime maps indicates it will end if you don't update within 2 years, and so you may be outside of that period?

    Thank You Sussamb,

It is possible that I'm outside of the period, I never thought about that, but if that is the case is not for the lack of trying to update the Europe map. I do regular updates to all the maps on 3490, I do not discriminate, its all or nothing, my North America map is at 2017.10, an indication that I have been update the devive. I use Garmin Express to do the updates and it always tells me the updates to both maps are successful. So I usually just accept that and go my way, but this time I question the 2014.10 date on the Europe map on my device, it appears Express has not been updating the Europe map. If the two year clause come into play now, then I will have to take this up with Garmin. I certainly don't want to have to buy another Europe map if their software and the Garmin 3490 are having problems communicating with each other.

I hope I have cleared up the confusion

    Thank You

  • Well the Express team should be able to help when they come along.

I'm assuming you do somehow have a lifetime update for both the NA and EU maps?

That is correct. I purchased the 3490 with Lifetime maps of North America and one year later I purchase the Lifetime map of Europe.
I'm sure there will be a logic explanation for why the Europe map won't load.

    Thanks
  • The only way to have done that would be if you first purchased the DVD and then the lifetime update? Did you do that?

Now that we know the serial number and you told us it is a North America device, I can tell you what is probably going on. Garmin Express only loads updates to the pre-installed maps directly to the device's memory or its SD (microSD) card. Updates for maps originally from a DVD using Garmin Express will only install to the computer. From there, you must use a second program called MapInstall to load the maps to your device or SD card. Maps loaded to the computer from Garmin Express should already be unlocked for the device. Please follow these steps:
    • Make sure the SD card is in the nuvi 3490LMT.
    • Connect the nuvi 3490LMT directly to the computer using the Garmin USB data cable.
    • Format the SD card to "FAT 32". If you do not know how, please use the FAQ, "">How do I format a microSD/SD card?">How do I format a microSD/SD card?"
    • Make sure all other programs are closed and launch MapInstall.
    • Follow the on-screen prompts and it will look for your device.
    • Make sure you select the option that shows the SD card and continue.
    • It should let you select to load "City Navigator Europe NT 2016.20". Make sure it is the "2016.20" that is selected and continue following the prompts.
Once finished, the nuvi 3490LMT should have the current Europe maps installed. I do recommend "Safely Removing" the device before it is unplugged if you have the option.

If you still have trouble, please tell us on what screen of MapInstall you get stuck and what exact errors you get.

  • Another great explanation Dave, as usual :). I hate to say it, but it is just another example of the ridiculous and unnecessary restrictions that Garmin puts on the map downloading/updating process. Loyal customers try to buy legitimate legal map products to use on their Garmin devices. Garmin should encourage this as added value to their products, but instead they seem put up roadblocks to make it as difficult as possible. Come on ... make it simple and straight forward for us to buy and install your products! Sorry for the mini-rant, but sometimes I think Garmin is trying to turn off people from buying their stuff. Ok.. 'nuff said, back to my rational dialog :)

Thank You Dave for the detailed instructions,

Once again I appreciate the help, however I still don't have the latest map and I am actually now with not Europe map at all. I followed your instructions, formatted the SD Card and ran MapInstall. MapInstall came up with a pop up window stating the following:

. "The following map products are currently locked"

followed by a list of all my maps including the Europe map. It then directs me to click the "Unlock Maps" button to unlock the maps online. I do that but it then fails because my Browser (FireFox running on Windows 10) is not supported by MapInstall, even after I installed the recommended new plug in for Firefox from Garmin.

    What can we do next?

    Thanks in advance.
