Garmin Express will not update maps on new 590lm

I received my 590lm yesterday and as the unit was new, had a very large map update. Every thing worked OK and Express said it would take 6hrs 45mins, however, 15 hours later it had not moved from 6hrs 45mins. I had no choice but to disconnect the unit which then failed to power up. I've sent it back to the supplier and get a new unit in two days.
What do I have to check or do to ensure the new unit can update the maps in Express? Can I do a test first so I do not get tied up in Express? Will I have to uninstall Garmin Express and reinstall? I am using Windows 7 and have no problems downloading with any other software. Thanks, Bann

I am sorry you are having trouble downloading map updates for your zumo 590LM. The issue you are describing is normally caused by an unstable internet connection. Because a map update cannot lose any data at all, if the transfer rate ever hits zero (even for a second) then Garmin Express has to go back and check all the already downloaded data. So if the connection keeps dropping for brief moments, it goes back and checks all the data. A connection that fluctuates a lot can cause the process to move very slowly if at all. Also, the time frame of 6:45 to complete is relatively high for a map update so this connection speed may have trouble.

Please first make sure your internet connection is meeting the ">Garmin Express">Garmin Express requirements. You may also want to run a ">speed test">speed test on the connection to make sure it is not badly fluctuating.

If you think you are meeting the requirements, please use the FAQ, "">How can Internet connection restrictions prevent me from successfully downloading maps for my Garmin device?">How can Internet connection restrictions prevent me from successfully downloading maps for my Garmin device?". I also suggest, use a wired Ethernet connection instead of using WiFi.
