Download slower than dial-up

Nuvi 2597 LMT EU, Garmin Express v3.2.29.0, Windows 8.1. Sustained ISP download speed: 40Mb/s.

I'm trying to update my maps. Express told me it would take >3 hours. Its download speed has been a pretty stable 16Kb/s. Yes, Kilobytes. That's slower than dial-up!! Clearly, the fault is with Garmin's servers and/or Express is artificially throttling the speed. It has taken 10 hours so far and has downloaded 81%. That's 12.5 hours for a download. That's appalling. Anyone know what's going on? I am a software engineer working in Internet systems - I didn't know companies could make such a lash-up of... download!!! It's just download of data! The world has been doing this for 23 years now and above 56Kb/s for about 15 years... wow. Is Garmin actually trying to prevent people getting the updates they have paid for? Grrrrrrrr.

Any help or advice appreciated.
  • Well the problem is probably with your system or ISP. My map downloads for the full EU map take about an hour.

Have you tried all the suggestions in our FAQ What should I do if I am having problems downloading updates in Garmin Express?

In addition, you may want to try rebooting the router/modem and the computer if not done already.

If the problem persists, contact Product Support by phone for in depth troubleshooting.

Hmmm, well, my ISP is giving me a sustained 40Mb/s and has been for some years now. My WiFi gives me 80Mb/s. And it's certainly not my machine. It's Garmin. It's either their server(s) or the client (Express) is throttling the throughput. My ISP's latency is variable but bandwidth is good on sustained connections. No ISP ever throttles throughtput on a single TCP/IP socket to 16KB/s. Why would my ISP target Garmin for throttling at 16KB/s per socket? The update speed has been a sustained 16KB/s for 12 hours now - that's not a network bottleneck, that's a socket-level throttle and it's clearly being applied by Garmin's servers or the client (Express). Even if it were a limit on Garmin's Internet interconnect it would go up and down as more and fewer people were actively starting and finishing updates - the fact that it's stayed so constant is a very strong indicator that it's a limit imposed by Garmin and no-one else.

It's either a fault that Garmin should know about and fix or it's intentional.

Thanks Lisa, the one thing I hadn't done was update express - just updated from v3.2.29.0 to v4.1.18.0. Unfortunately, I can't check whether it's helped as the device is up-to-date now so it wont do any downloads. But hopefully it'll improve things next time. Also, hopefully Express v4 will tell me if it needs updating too...

    Cheers,
    Dave
