Update fails in Garmin Express. Can't hard reset

I tried to update my Garmin Nuvi 2497 and it appeared to be working but stopped at around 44%. I waited for well over an hour but it hadn't advanced
I tried to close it down to start over but now Garmin Express checks for updates. states that there are map updates. I accept t&c's then got an error message saying it failed (words to that effect)
I tried doing a hard reset by pressing the bottom right corner of the screen along with the off button. The words system appeared several times over then stopped. I continued pressing and the same thing repeated over and over but no hard reset
I reconnected to computer and Garmin Express and now no error message comes but now it says "preparing device for map update" "This may take a minute" but it's just hanging there
The device still works when restarted but it appears impossible to update it

Just got a message in red again "There was an error installing the update"

Could someone advise

    I am sorry the map update is failing for your nuvi 2497 and I am happy to help you. If the update is failing at less than 50%, it is having trouble downloading data from our server. Please try the following steps:
    • All Firewalls, Anti Virus, or Auto Protect programs will need to be disabled.
      • Certain antiviruses such as "Trend Micro" or "ESET NOD32" must be "Exited" and not just "Paused"/"Disabled".
    • If you use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) then please disable it.
    • If you use a proxy then please disable it.
    • If you use wireless internet (Airport/WiFi) then please try a wired connection (Ethernet) instead.

    We also want to remove the already downloaded data in case something bad is in memory. Please do these steps:
    • Launch Garmin Express.
    • Select the nuvi 2497.
    • Click on "Tools".
    • Select "Remove Device" and then confirm you want it removed.

    Now, please add the device back to Garmin Express and run the update again. If the update still fails, can you tell us what is the serial number of your device and what version of Windows is on your computer?

    The same issues!

    I take it you have a problem with your customer service department?

    Please see the response below to the issue that I raised.

    2 to 3 days have been and gone and no one has come back to me which is very poor customer service in this day and age.

    I performed the latest update and now have no maps.

    I get the same error message as the customer above.

    I have followed the advice that you have given to the customer above and still the problem persists.

    I was due to use my Navigator V when I commence an 11 day trip through Europe starting this coming Saturday and thought that by alerting Garmin to my problem the issue could be fixed.

    I now have to revert to raising the issue with you over the internet in the hope that the problem can be resolved within the next 3 days.

    You may wish to locate the person who should have dealt with my concern and awaken him or her with the edge of a spade....

    As the suggestions provided by Dave did not resolve the issue, more in depth troubleshooting will be needed, more than can be handled over a forum post. It would be best to contact Product Support by phone. This will also be the quickest process as you are leaving for a trip shortly.
