New maps not uploaded to device after cancelling purchase through Garmin Express

Hi, I purchased lifetime maps through Garmin Express for a Nuvi 50 and the purchase process hung at the end (or I assumed it was hanging and cancelled it). I thought the purchase had been cancelled but 2 days later, I got an email confirmation and going to my.garmin.com the maps are showing as purchased. So now how do I upload the maps to the device? I cannot find any option in Garmin Express to activate the new maps. The my.garmin site has an Add to Device button but this doesn't do anything although the GCP plugin shows as being installed.

Can someone please help?
  • The Express team can better answer this as they have access to your account, but assuming all has gone OK then if your map is currently up to date you won't have any maps to download. Your lifetime maps will kick in when the next map update is released.

The problem is that the maps are not updated. They are still the old maps and I don't seem to have any way to update to the lifetime maps that I purchased. I suspect something screws up if you cancel the purchase before finally activating the maps.

I am sorry you are having trouble activating your purchase to the nuvi 50 and I am happy to assist. The purchase is on the account so please follow these steps to activate it:
    • Make sure your device is plugged directly into the computer bypassing all USB hubs and external devices.
    • Log into your ">myGarmin account">myGarmin account using Internet Explorer (IE).
    • Click on the "myMaps" tab.
    • Click on the "Add to Device" button next to your map purchase.
      • If it asks to install the Garmin Communicator Plugin, please do. Afterwards, you may need to go through steps 2 - 4 again.

    • Activate the map update to your device by clicking on your device.
    • Launch Garmin Express.
    • Select your device.
    • Click on "Tools".
    • Select to "Remove Device" and confirm you want it removed.
    • Add the device back to Garmin Express and it should now show there is an update.

If you still have trouble, please either email or call ">Product Support">Product Support for more detailed assistance.

Thanks for the quick update. But at step 4 (Add to Device) nothing comes back. I think it is failing to find the device. I've been through the plugin installation and it says it's installed OK and it is showing as available in IE. I guess I'll need to contact support. Thanks..
  • Are you using IE11? GCP can be a bit temperamental with other browsers as they are withdrawing support for NPAPI plug ins. Go to this page to check that GCP sees your device:

Update: I rebooted the laptop and now it lets me add to device. Next problem, I don't enough storage so off to buy a bigger SD card. Hopefully the problem should be solved though. And yes, it was IE11. Thanks for the advice.
  • Good news. Hopefully all will be well now.
