Installations on drives other than C: are a mess.

Is there anyone at Garmin that knows how to design a user-friendly install scenario and how to program? It would be a scenario that doesn't make assumptions about everyone having a C: drive that is huge enough for everything?

I have a SMALL C: drive for the operating system. I have a LARGE D: drive for everything else.

It is a bit klutzy, bu using Garmin Express there is a way to tell it to install some things on the D: drive. The problem is that Garmin installs all sorts of stuff on the C: drive even if when I specify the D: drive. C:\ProgramData has too much Garmin junk. Yes, junk. It wouldn't be junk if Garmin installed files on the D: drive.

I am on Windows 10 with a 125 GB C: drive and a 1T D: drive. I really want to use the D: drive for installs and data. I have set Windows to use the D: drive where ever possible. Garbage programming such as Garmin's ignores the fact that many systems are configured with multiple drives.

Is Garmin EVER going to really consider the customer?

    I am sorry for the troubles. Garmin Express uses the system defined environment variable locations for downloading files. Which ever drive is the system drive will be used. If you install the application to the D: drive but C: is where Windows is installed, Garmin Express will still use the C: drive. The %ProgramData%\Garmin\CoreService\Download folder is where the Map and Firmware files are downloaded. Once you have updated the GPS, the contents of the two folders can be deleted or you can use the steps in the FAQ to move the maps to another location and link the two folders.

    Can I move installed Garmin maps to another location on my computer to save space?https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={c55f2850-d326-11df-c826-000000000000}

    Garmin Express does delete older map versions from the %ProgramData%\Garmin\CoreService\Download\Map folder once a year to prevent a cumulative collection of map versions.

    Again I am sorry for the troubles.

  • Yes, I have the same problem, an MS Surface with 125gb hard drive.

    The trouble is that when you do get the install to acknowledge the the D drive (in my case D:Garmin\Maps) Express installs temp files to the C drive (Downloads etc). These files are actually larger thean the downloaded map, and don't get purged!

    So please Garmin, live up to your word and make the product professional .
