Can't Download Maps thru Garmin Express

I work in the Middle East and bought a Nuvi 55, which came pre-installed with an Arabic-only map. So I bought the Middle East map - a month ago- I have never been able to download it. First, what is wrong with Garmin Express that it is not compatible with most browsers? After fighting through that issue, I was never able to download the map because the Nuvi always gets caught up in software update that never completes. I've been round and round with Garmin tech support and they have been useless. At this point, I just want the money I spent on the map refunded. I'm going to have to eat the cost of the device because refunds are not really done here. Honestly, I should have just tried Google Maps on my phone before I wasted all of this money, since it turns out Google Maps work just fine here. I'm a cyclist and a heavy Garmin user, but this experience has made me really hate the company.

  • Not sure what your problem is but Express is a program that runs independently of browsers. Perhaps if you explained more fully what you're trying to do, where it fails and any error messages you could be helped.

    I am sorry to hear about the difficulties with your nuvi 55 and mapping purchase and I'll try to clear up some of the confusion.

    The maps you purchased are Downloadable Content (DLC) maps. These maps are not downloaded through Garmin Express. The maps will be downloaded using Garmin Communicator Plugin (GCP) through Internet Explorer and your myGarmin account. I checked your myGarmin account and the maps you purchased have not been activated to your device yet. The maps must be activated and tied to your device before they can be downloaded. While the following FAQ mentions map updates specifically, this activation process will be the same for your DLC mapping purchases.

    In order to download the DLC mapping, you will more than likely need to added Garmin to your trusted sites. The following FAQs will address settings changes and troubleshooting if you continue to have difficulty.

    I'd also like to address the issues with the software update for the nuvi 55. I see from your message that the update never completes. Are you receiving any error in Garmin Express or does it just hang? Does it finish the download but fails to send to the device? Or does the update send to the device but when power cycled, the device never updates? Once the update has been sent to the device and it has been disconnected, some devices do not automatically restart and must be turned on manually for the software update to load. Also, have you tried the troubleshooting in our FAQ?

    You can also use WebUpdater to update the system software on the nuvi 55, it can be downloaded from here.

    If the update fails to send to the device, you may need to run a check disk on the device:

    Also, when trying to download the DLC mapping, the process will also attempt a system software update so you may have success updating that way.

    However, if the update still fails, we will need more information in order to continue troubleshooting.
