Maps download twice.??

I have two Nuvis with lifetime updates, a 765 and a 2597. Yesterday I updated the maps on both.

When I updated the first device I selected the option to install on both PC and device. When I updated the second device I selected Device only.

I assumed that Express would only download the maps once and update the second device from the already downloaded maps. NOT!!

When I hit the Update button for the second device it downloaded the maps again. Yes, it actually downloaded them.. It said it was downloading on the status screen and it took just as long to update as the first time.

Is this the way Express is supposed to work now? I thought I had seen posts in here that it only needed to download the maps once to update multiple devices??

I apologize that the Garmin Express process is confusing. In some previous versions of Garmin Express, we did have a progress bar for the individual step and a separate bar for the total time. This was removed because many customers complained this was confusing. The label just says "Downloading","Building", etc. because most customers were telling us they didn't like the details. If we show all the details, the label would change probably about 10 - 20 times for just the "Downloading" portion.

As for the time it took, the nuvi 2597LMT downloads over 2.6GB more data than the map for the nuvi 765. This is made up of its Speech Recognition (1.04GB), its Junction View (497MB), and its SID files (1.09GB) that are various other functions. So, the map update for the nuvi 2597LMT is actually almost twice the size of the update for the nuvi 765. This is why it took almost as long for the second device. The only map update file that is the same for these devices is the main image file (gmapprom.img) which is about 2.52GB.

Hopefully this clarifies the update process.

Thanks Dave. Yes, that claries things perfectly.
