incompatible sd card, but it work before OK with express

Hello,
So, have a bmw Sat Nav V. Also have a fat32 64 gb sd card, to hold the maps. I have used ( windows 10) express before to install the maps to the sd card and the pc, with no issues plus firmware updates. Now I have an update notification for eu maps 2016.30 via express. But now express says I have an
“Incompatible card – must be between 5gb and 32 gb”. I have re-seated it , used different usb cable, but still express insists on it.
Why is it before it had no issues now it does.
Do not want to really buy a 32 gb card to fix this issue, when it worked before.

Anybody else had these issue ?
(Incidentally I have used also tried webupdater and that states my device is up todate.)

thanks

  • WebUpdater is for software updates, so not surprising it's not telling you about a map update.

Have you tried reformatting the card?

Oh did not know that about webupdate...thanks
Do not see why I have to reformat the card , as I have already done that previously, it currently holds my current maps. Express just complains about it, when previously it did not.

    Thanks

I have confirmed with our Auto OEM department that yes, the 64 GB SD card in FAT32 format is compatible with the device. Since Express is saying the card is incompatible, it is pointing to an issue with the SD card and they recommended it be formatted to see if that resolves the error.

That being said, was the 64 GB SD card in exFAT format when you received it or was it already FAT32? If it was exFAT, what utility did you use to format the card? What happens when you format it again and try Express, do you still receive the incompatible card error message?

    Hello Lisa,
When I brought the sd card, I downloaded a utility to format it , cannot remember what it was..sorry. Now I have windows 10, I believe I can format to fat 32 within windows 10, with file explorer, so I will do that. Does Garmin have a best practice in formatting to fat 32 ?

Also if I re-format it, all my maps will be gone, when I attempt to update the maps again with express, will it complain about no maps found ?

    Thanks

  • That shouldn't cause an issue.

OK , so re-formatted the 64gb card, still express complained. Got a 32gb card and formatted it .
Express saw it. Now my basecamp + sat nav V. Are all upto date.
Thanks for the advise from Lisa.

    Thanks

  • Seems like an issue with that particular card then. Glad all working now.
