I used Garmin Express (v 4.1.12.0) to update the maps on my Nuvi 465 yesterday and have now been getting a "Can't Unlock Maps" message whenever I turn it on. I just recently upgraded to Windows 10 and was wondering if this is a known problem and if there is a solution? I used the safely remove hardware when I disconnected the Garmin and have also tried to reinstall the map update but with the same result. Since I use this unit for work I really need to get this issue resolved quickly. Thanks for any help.
I am sorry you are getting a "Can't Unlock Maps" message after updating. This is not a Windows 10 issue specifically. It means the map update was not successful. This can probably be corrected by running the update again and "Safely Removing" the device before it is unplugged. Please try the following after you run the update again:
In the lower-right corner of the screen next to the computer's clock, click on "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media".
If you do not see this, please click on the "show more icons" button and you will then find it.
Select the Garmin device.
Wait for the computer to tell you it is safe to remove the device. If it says it is busy, please let it finish.
Once it says it is safe to remove, then please try unplugging the device.
If you still have trouble, please contact Product Support.
Thanks Dave. I have tried the update 4 times and used the safely remove hardware option each time and received the safe to remove message each time but always get the same results. I will contact customer support as you suggest.
The 'can't unlock maps' message indicates a missing .unl file. Before phoning support try this:
1) Log into your myGarmin account.
2) Click on the myMaps tab.
3) Find your GPS in the list and click on the details link to the right of the image of your device.
4) Find and copy the Product Key for your map product.
5) Connect your GPS to the computer.
6) At the top right of the page there's a "Unlock On the Road/Trail Maps" link. Click on that. You'll be taken to a "Unlock Maps" page.
7) Scroll to the bottom of that page. You'll see a section with the Unit ID field filled in.
8) Enter the "Product Key/Coupon Code" (from 4)) and then click the "Retrieve Unlocks" button.
That will (re)create the GMA and UNL files on your device.
I am sorry for the troubles. There was an issue with the nuvi 465 in your myGarmin account which I have fixed. Please delete the nuvi 465 from Garmin Express then re-add it. Garmin Express should notify you of a City Navigator North America NT 2016.20 map update available. Once the update is finished the Can't Unlock Maps message should disappear.
