Just received Nuvii52 LM in mail and battery evidently run down. Plugged into USB and connected with Garmin Express recognizing unit as a Nuvi 55 instead of 52LM and offereing it 9 nuvi55 updates? Also plugged in about an hour into usb port and screen stays continuously lit with Garmin Logo, web address and yellow image of device connected to computer. Touching screen does nothing. Don't want a burned in image. Would I be okay to do downloads even though it is not giving me the correct name for my device?
Upon closer inspection I looked at the little micro tag in back of unit and it does say 55 LM It came shipped in a 52LM box and was advertised as such. However it is registering as a 55 not a 55LM which is on the tag. I now believe this mean I would not be able to download free updated maps. GRRRR?
Consider yourself lucky. The 52 is a 2013 model, while the 55 is a 2014 model. The 55 supports saved multipoint routes via Trip Planner, where the 52 doesn't. For me, that would be a big advantage.
I suspect you will be OK on the map updates. AFAIK, most models register with their basic model number (not including the lifetime maps or traffic designations). There is no hardware difference between a 55 and a 55LM ... it is just that the 55LM was bundled with the lifetime map subscription and the 55 wasn't. If you want to be certain, call Garmin customer support and verify that your serial number has the lifetime maps.
Thanks It seems that garmin express indicated nuvi 55 but when I went to My garmin it did indeed show I had a Nuvi 55LM on my list of registered devices. So was lucky to get the newer model. Went ahead and did the 8 updates which included an updated map upload.
Yes on the screen question. I forgot to answer that part of your question, but that is the normal display when connected to a PC in MTP or mass storage mode. Don't worry about the screen burn in. It really isn't a problem on newer screens like the nuvi has. My 8 year old nuvi's (755T and 855) have been plugged in for hours during their lifetime and show no signs of burn in.
