Garmin fails to boot after map update

I used a PC running Windows 7 to complete a map update on my Garmin nuvi 1690. The map update process appeared to be successful; however, now when I turn the GPS on the maps will not load. All I can see is the 'Garmin' logo on a black screen. My attempts to perform a reset of any kind have been unsuccessful. Additionally, the PC no longer recognises that the GPS is connected.

Your urgent assistance is appreciated as I am moving house in one week.
  • I suspect you may have corrupted the map data by disconnecting your device before the update was complete. Did you do a safe eject at the end or simply disconnect?

Your best bet for a speedy resolution though would be to contact Product Support.

If the nuvi 1690 no longer boots (loads maps and goes to main screen) and no longer goes into mass-storage mode so that the computer can detect it, it has malfunctioned and will need to be repaired/replaced. I recommend contacting Support in Australia to do so:

Garmin Nuvi 2455LM fails to turn on after map update

Today I used Garmin Express to perform a map update on my Garmin Nuvi 2455LM. The map update was successful with no errors reported. But now when I turn on the GPS, it shows the Garmin logo then turns off, sometimes I can see a white flash before it turns off. Also, if I connect the GPS to the PC using the same USB cable, the device is no longer detected.

But the map update completed successfully. I didn't disconnect it midway during the update process.

There has to be something wrong with the Garmin Express software if two different people with different models of nuvi are unable to start up their devices after performing the map update. The symptoms that "KLT1982" describe are just about identical to mine.

My GPS was working perfectly fine before I started the map update. Battery was fully charged. And I used the original USB cable that came with my Garmin device. It's almost like the Garmin Express software is deliberately killing off my GPS and forcing me to purchase a new one.

Is there any way I can reinstall the old software or map into the Garmin?
  • As I posted your best bet for a resolution is to contact support by phone, diagnosing what could have gone wrong over a forum in situations like this is not easy.

However given the number of successful updates using Express it's not an Express issue, and certainly not an attempt to make you buy a new GPS!

Incidentally, you may not have ejected half way through but did you do a safe eject once you thought the process was finished?

Yes, performed safe eject after update with Garmin Express. So not too sure what happened during Garmin Express update process.

But I managed to fix the non-booting issue with xxx. It's all working fine now.
