Garmin Communicator Plugin very slow & reporting a negative percentage done

Hi

I'm trying to download Europe NT maps which I purchased through the Garmin website. I was dismayed to learn that the only way to do so was by using the browser "Garmin Communicator Plugin".

The actual experience of using this plugin has been horrendous. Chrome flat out refuses to install it; Firefox says that the plugin is no longer supported, but will install it; IE11 is the only major browser which seems to uncomplainingly support the plugin.

I've tried the download on Firefox and IE on three different computers, encompassing two OSes (Windows 7 and Mac OS X), and two different internet connections (both modern, fast, broadband connections).

I have an empty 4GB microSD card installed in my nuvi 55 LMT, which the communicator plugin reports to be sufficient space to install the maps.

A file of less than 4GB in size should take no more than a few minutes to download.

So far, the download attempts that I have made have all run for longer than an hour. The first three simply failed after more than an hour, citing a disconnection. There appeared to be no mechanism to resume a failed download, so each time I had to start again, losing hours of "progress".

The current attempt I am making has been running for about three hours. It appears to be still in progress, but it has been reporting "Estimated time remaining: less than one minute" for most of those three hours. Further, the progress bar indicates that it is a negative percentage done, and that negative percent is climbing up towards zero. It just ticked over from -14% done to -13% done. These numbers are meaningless.

Is the communicator plugin completely broken? Is there any sensible way of downloading the map that I have spent money on?

I'm reposting this, as it seems my original submission didn't work.
  • GCP isn't broken as you suggest, but browser support for all NPAPI plug ins (which GCP is) is being withdrawn by browsers due to concerns over security. However at the moment I think only Chrome does not work, see here http://software.garmin.com/en-US/gcp.html

As for a 4Gb download only taking a few minutes I'm afraid a map download will take far longer than that as it's not just a 4GB file, the best I've managed for a map update (with a 50Mbs pipe) is just under the hour, although that also includes compiling the map once the download of the data has taken place.

If you're getting a 'disconnection' message check the power save settings on your PC, it's possible they are timing out the download. Incidentally whenever I've suffered a 'disconnection' (very rare) it's clear that the download doesn't start from the beginning, so data already downloaded is recognised.

Downloadable Content mapping like the City Navigator Europe NT 2016.20 does start over from the beginning when the download process fails. With the Downloadable Content mapping downloads, the actual image files are downloaded to the Windows Temp folder and if the download is interrupted, it must be started again from the beginning.

It is quite common for the download progress bar to go to negative numbers. I have seen it go so far as -30+ before. As the download continues, the negative numbers will go back to 0 and then it will proceed from 0 up to 100.

As the download process seems to be getting interrupted, have you tried the troubleshooting in our FAQ What should I do when having issues downloading Downloadable Content?

You may also find helpful information in another FAQ, Why does my Downloadable Content freeze at 50%?

If you continue to experience problems with the download of this mapping, I recommend contacting Product Support by phone for further assistance.
