Etrex Legend HCx - Express Download Not Available and Manual Download Not Working

Haven't downloaded anything in over a year, things have changed. The express download method does not work for the Etrex Legend HCx and my PC (windows 8.1) does not recognize the unit on the USB port. Any suggestions?

  • You can still use WebUpdater. However if your device isn't recognised then you need to resolve that issue first.

Have you installed Garmin Communicator plug in? If so see if it detects your device.

  • I did. It sees the device but the computer doesn't. I tried a different computer, it doesn't see it either. Maybe the USB charging cable is damaged?
  • If the plug in sees your Etrex then all should be well. Have you tried running WebUpdater to see if it recognises it?
  • WEbupdater recognizes the device and says it is up to date. I double checked with my phone just now and the computer has no trouble seeing it, using the same USB port. Is this weird?

The eTrex Legend HCx is a Garmin Mode device, not a mass-storage mode device, which is why it is not compatible with Garmin Expess. The device will show up in Device manager as a Garmin Device, not a Disk Drive like a mass-storage device would. If you are trying to access the device like a hard drive, that is not possible.

That being said, while the internal memory on the eTrex Legend HCx can't be accessed like a drive, the micro SD card can. If you change the Interface to USB Mass-Storage in the Setup menu and connect the device to the computer, the eTrex is turned into an external card reader and you can access the micro SD card through applications on the computer like Windows/File Explorer.

What exactly are you trying to do with your device connected to your computer? If we had more information on this, we would be able to provide better information.

  • I'm trying to upload the track log I made this morning. I do have an sd card in; I downloaded my topo maps onto it. So I was expecting it to find the sd storage card in the same way it finds the one on my phone.

    Got it, thanks.
