Message: "You may want to purchase a memory card . . ."

Hello All,
I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 2597LMT and installed an 8 gb memory card in it, which showed up as empty when viewing it in Windows Explorer (Win 7 64 bit).
When I updated maps on the GPS, Garmin Express showed the GPS "internal storage was almost full".
So I "surfed around" and found out about Garmin's MapInstall program (why doesn't Garmin make info about this program readily available, by the way?). I downloaded and installed it and when used, it put some of the files on the SD card, which using Garmin Express could not succeed in doing.
Now Windows Explorer shows 1.07 gb of 7.02 gb free on the GPS, and 5.07 gb of 7.39 gb free on the SD card. BUT, Garmin Express is still telling me: "Internal storage is almost full. You may want to purchase a memory card for this device to ensure sufficient space for future updates." What's up with that? Can't Garmin Express "see" the SD card or something?
Thanks ahead of time,
Robtl
  • No it doesn't until it installs maps onto it, then it will use it as the default location for maps. It's partly why MapInstall shouldn't generally be used.

The other is that it only installs the map. By using it you won't get things like junction view. If it were me I'd forget about MapInstall and revert to Express.
  • Thank you for the fast reply!
So, now that I used MapInstall and it installed files onto the SD card, will updates in the future using Garmin Express now "see" the SD card and install onto it, or do I have to do something more?
    Thanks again!
  • No, because Express didn't install them. I'd clear the card then run Express and allow it to install the map. If there's space on your nuvi it will be installed there, if not Express will ask for the card and install to that.

So, to be sure I understand, when Garmin Express sees no more storage available on the GPS, it will then use the SD card as necessary . . .?
And, at that time will I no longer get the message about "You may want to purchase a memory card for this device to ensure sufficient space for future updates"?
Will I be OK with the files that MapInstall wrote to the GPS or do I need to do something about them?
    Again, thanks for your insight.

  • Well the map should work but as I said you won't have other things like junction view.

As for Express, it will use the card when there isn't enough space for a map update. Once it has used the card it will then treat it as the default location for maps.
  • I would prefer to retain all features so, would it be prudent to erase the files on the GPS as well and do a "clean install"?
If 'yes', how is that done?
    Thanks again!
  • No, don't delete files on the nuvi itself. If you haven't already done so make a full backup of your nuvi so that you have the files should you ever need them.

Just remove the files that MapInstall put on the card. Then run Express.
  • Thank you again!
I have done so and will try the GPS to confirm.
