Sorry for the long post, but if it helps anyone else....
I bought a new Nuvi 2599 in August; whilst the device works well and I’m pleased with the functionality, I have also spent many hours since trying to get the device to update both its internal operating software and maps.
The problem I had was that Garmin Express would tell me there were updates and start to download them, but after a few seconds it would just stop, no error message. On numerous occasions I left it running overnight, just in case, but nothing.
I contacted the support team for assistance and was not impressed. After a good start asking for logs and stuff, they just left me for nearly a month until I rang again to find out what was happening, they apparently lost my data and thought my problem had gone away. So we started again going over the same stuff, new log files etc. At least this time emails were answered within a day or so and they sent me a link to Web Updater, an alternative piece of software to express , but it still didn’t work and we were getting nowhere, I would just get passed on to somebody else who asked the same questions again.
They kept telling me I needed a good Internet connection, not to use wireless and disable third party firewalls.
My PC is a 32bit AMD Athlon II X2 250 with 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 and few hundred GB of spare drive space. I have a high speed fibre line through a Netgear N600 Gigabit Router and used the USB cable to my PC. I use Windows 7 Professional , with AVG antivirus, I also use IObit Advanced System care with IObit Malware Fighter, Malwarebytes and CCleaner. The PC is used daily and scanned weekly as it’s used by my wife’s business. It is very stable and has been reliable for a couple of years now.
I use Firfox, Chrome and Internet Explorer, swapping these around and changing settings as directed. I also tried a separate net book on my network, but this didn’t work either.
The last email I received a couple of days ago suggested I try the device on an alternative network, but if this failed then I would have to send the Nuvi back to Garmin and they would update it.
Well it worked on my friends PC no problem, the software updated from 7.50 to 7.80 and the maps and other stuff all updated too.
Plugged it back in to my PC and it showed as up to date and then asked if I wanted to download the maps onto my hard drive for use with Base Camp. So clicked OK and was immediately prompted by windows to allow Garmin to modify data on my computer, this never happened before. As soon as this was accepted Garmin Express started downloading as before, but this time went through the full download, check update routine.
After all that it would appear that there was an issue between the version software of the device and my computer/network build (I’m sure if the right support people had looked at my log files they could have seen this). I guess I’ll find out for sure if it’s fixed with the next update....watch this space.
