Error during synchronization with Garmin Connect

Hi,

I have a Garmin Forerunner 305 and I would like to upload all my activities on Garmin Connect. I thus installed Garmin Express and added my device to the program, but once the synchronization starts, it never succeeds and instead I get an error message saying "there was an error during synchronization with Garmin Connect"...
I am a bit concerned about how to work this out. Last time I have added all my trainings (from the last two years) manually to the Garmin Connect, by exporting my data from Garmin Training Center into a .tcx file, but then I get one massive activity instead of all single trainings being counted as an individual activity (don't know if this is normal or not).

I can provide more information, I understand that this is a bit vague, but the error message really doesn't help finding out what the problem is...

The logs show that the sync is basically timing out because it is trying to compare data on the Forerunner 305 from 8/2012 to current with Garmin Connect. Check to see if the .tcx files are still on your computer. You can locate that folder using this FAQ (I know they are not .fit files but they get transferred from the device to the same folder on the computer with Garmin Express): How do I remove FIT files that fail to sync in Garmin Express from my computer?
    http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={b2320530-05f0-11e4-eaba-000000000000}&kbName=garmin

If the files make it to the Sync folder, you can try to manually upload them. If they give an error they are corrupted. You can check other forums here on how to correct .tcx files. I recommend moving the files to the Desktop or some other more easily accessible location for the manual upload. Instructions on manually uploading can be found this this FAQ, however you would navigate to the file location on the PC and not the device: How do I manually upload data from USB Mass Storage devices to Garmin Connect?
    http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={b16302a0-02ac-11de-515b-000000000000}&kbName=garmin

Once the files have been uploaded they should be deleted from the device.

  • I'm having the same problem

I'm having the same problem as you, and i think we're not the only ones...
Sorry i don't know how to edit this files, please correct the program Express so everyone could fix this easily.

I am sorry for the troubles. Please see the FAQ below. Sync issues are usually related to corrupt data in the transfer between the device and Connect.

What can I try when my ANT Fitness device will not sync with Garmin Express?

  • Hi,

thanks again for the answer and the help ! So basically, the problem (in my case) is that there is too much data on my device and that gives a "time out error" ? So for all my previous trainings, I will have to just manually add them to Garmin Connect (knowing it will give me one massive 'activity' instead of all single activities, like I mentioned in my first post) and then delete all trainings from my device. From then on, the next training should synchronize by itself, but do I have to delete all data from my Forerunner everytime synchro has been done ?

It is the shear amount of data on the Forerunner that is causing the time out but it's possible some of the activity files are making it to the computer. Their location is referred to in the FAQ: How do I remove FIT files that fail to sync in Garmin Express from my computer? from Lisa's previous post. You should manually upload (instructions below) these files to Connect then delete them from the folder. You should also delete the corresponding dates from the Forerunner. Repeat the process until you have as many of the files a possible. They will be separate dates not one big activity.

As far as the Forerunner's memory, it is a good idea to keep no more than 30 days worth of activities. You will need to manually delete them after a successful sync.

If you were previously using Garmin Training Center an alternative might be to use the EXPORT function to export a file containing your activities then upload the file to Connect. If you have multiple years worth of data then you'll want to break it down into smaller periods of time like per year. If the year export will not upload, break that year down into months etc..

    To export data:

    • Click the View menu
    • Select History
    • Locate the data to be exported
    • Click the item or folder containing the item (year, month, week, or day)
    • Click File
    • Click Export "name of item"
    • Choose a location to save the file.
    • Click Save

To manually upload activities to Garmin Connect:

    • Sign into Garmin Connect
    • Click "+" icon in top right corner of page
    • Click Upload Your Activities
    • Click Manual Upload tab
    • Follow on-screen instructions

  • Hi again,

For now I have sucessfully uploaded the "big data file" containing my last 3 years of trainings (I am too lazy to cut it into smaller pieces, although this implies I cannot change the individual training's names for that file in Garmin Connect... instead, I get "Running 1", "Running 2" etc for names), and yesterday and today I synchronized sucessfully my two trainings automatically with Garmin Express, so everything seems to work fine now, thank you for your help !

Two last remarks: it seems that when plugging my watch, as Garmin Express and Garmin TC are trying to access the device simultaneously, a systematic error occurs in Garmin Express, I usually solve this by disconnecting the device and reconnecting it right afterwards and it seems to work out fine, I guess there is no other way, if I want to synchronize on both platforms ?

Will your team also work on a particular view of differents laps during a training. In Garmin TC we could have exact time etc for different laps instead of one "training-long" graph, it could maybe be usefull to add... (simple suggestion) Edit.: I didn't see the "split" button down the screen, so this comment is no longer useful

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help !

I am glad to hear that you got your data uploaded. The only way to prevent both Express and Training center from detecting your device (assuming that you are wanting to keep Training Center installed) is to disable gStart so that Training Center will only detect your device when you open it manually. Follow the instructions below to disable gStart:

    • Right-click on the gStart icon that looks like a small, dark blue 'g' in a light blue circle in the lower right of the computer's screen, near the clock.
    • Select Exit
    • Uncheck the box next to Automatically start gStart the next time you log in
    • Click OK
