Disable auto update of software

Hi, I posted this in the 510 and GC forums but apparently GE is where I need to be, so...

Is there any way to disable the automatic software update when connecting an Edge device to Garmin Connect/ Express?
I cannot remember the last time I used a physical (USB) connection to Garmin to upload my rides as I simply DO NOT want my software upgraded. I am perfectly happy on V3.5 (Edge 510) and if I ever upgrade would actually prefer to use the Web Updater.

A friend of mine was in a similar situation, a perfectly working Edge that became an absoulte bug ridden mess after simply connecting her device to upload some rides. She didn't want it upgraded, but had no choice in the matter and the forum is full of people with issues after having an upgrade "forced" on them.

If this isn't an option, PLEASE Garmin, make it so!

I am sorry you cannot prevent the Edge 510 from updating automatically. Unfortunately, this cannot be disabled. Many updates released for fitness devices improve the functionality between the devices, Express, and uploading to Connect. So, our developers expect the device to be up to date.

If you think we should change this, please submit this suggestion at our ">Garmin Ideas">Garmin Ideas website. We cannot guarantee the change, but it will get implemented if the designers feel the change is needed. If you know others who agree, you may suggest this site to them as well.

Let us know if you have more questions.

  • Hi David, have submitted a request as suggested - thanks.

I understand the need to have software up to date for compatibility and support purposes, and I suppose if the software update process and software in general was robust enough, this wouldn't be a problem, but to be frank, the software update experience is often terrible rendering devices unstable or even unusable!
