Nuvi 765t Reboots after MAP update (today)

I have a Nuvi 765t that Ive been using for years; countless updates. Ive updated the maps today which was successful but upon rebooting the satnav I only reached the progress bar after the status "Loading Maps" and the satnav resets. This obviously hasnt happened before and Ive no idea why a map update from Garmin would brick the device! Corrupt file?

Ive tried removing the SD card, no effect.
I cant get to the point to clear user data.
The computer doesnt detect the device.

Does the bootloader not allow access to the mass storage? Presumably not which is a shame.
Do you guys use a dual image scheme for roll backs and fixing the device (I implement this in all my embedded designs so the device can roll back if it fails).

And finally, I havent had any problems before, but is 500mA via USB (from a bench power supply) man enough to boot the device. After previous updates Ive had no problem with the device connected to the computer but perhaps the battery is getting old and youve been relying on it in the peak power consumption of the device.

Any ideas?

Edited to add: How come theres no Automotive/Nuvi forum?

Can't speak for your issue, (I had a 1490 "brick" in the early days of GE), But the 500 mA should be plenty to power up the Nuvi. (That is the typical amperage of a USB port)
  • Do a little Googling on "nuvi preboot mode" and "garmincure3" and you may find a possible solution.

I am sorry your device keeps restarting since the update. We can try setting the nuvi 765t into pre-boot mode and leaving it connected to the computer. This may allow it to switch to Mass Storage mode and show up as a drive. Then, we can remove the data that is causing the trouble. Please try the following:
    • Verify the nuvi is off and disconnected from the computer.
    • Press and hold your finger on the screen of the nuvi.
    • Slide the power switch to the left and immediately to the right (Lock).
    • Connect the nuvi to the computer while still pressing the screen.
    • After 15 seconds, it should try to connect to the computer. You can release the screen.

If the nuvi 765t connects, delete the GUPDATE.GCD file from inside the Garmin folder on the nuvi drive. Then, please see if it works when disconnected from the computer. If the problem persists, it would be best to contact Product Support by phone.

Thanks David but Id tried that. Unfortunately the device rebooted before the USB device was recognised by the computer.

I did fix the issue. I looked at the supply on my oscilloscope and the battery was on its last legs. Received the battery this morning, replaced it and the device boots up :)

Hopefully it should last longer off power too now.
