Garmin Express fails to sense 305 most of the time

Every now and then, Garmin Express will actually work! Unfortunately, most of the time I get this:

No devices found.
Please connect your device now and try again.

But my Forerunner 305 IS connected and charges w/o problems!

If I keep pressing try again while changing ports, cradles or put saliva on the cradle/watch contacts, sometimes GE will find the device. Sometimes it takes hours of futzing around.

This is frustrating and a real PITA!

btw: Running Win 8.1 with all current updates applied.

What to do?

If Garmin Express occasionally detects your device after you switch USB ports etc.. Take a pencil eraser to brass connectors on the back of the watch and the cradle it sits in. If your computer had a problem with the USB drivers the Forerunner 305 uses, you would be getting a Windows message, USB Device Not Recognized. This issue is addressed in the FAQ: How do I resolve the "USB Device Not Recognized error when connecting my Garmin USB device to my computer?

Since the Forerunner 305 has been around a while I also suggest that you delete any History from the watch that is already uploaded to your Garmin Connect account. Keep less than 30 days worth of History on the device at any one time.

What does the pencil eraser do?

There are no hardware messages or events related to Garmin Express. There are no error indicators in Device Manager.

Your FAQ link does not work:

Do you have a Forerunner 305 or and Edge 305. Your original post did not specify. Taking a pencil eraser to the brass contacts on a Forerunner 305 will clean the grime and sweat build up that is common to that device. Update your web browser to the latest version or go to https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/search.htm and type the articles' title in the Search box if you would like to read the FAQ.

Forerunner 305. Browser is up to date (FF 41.0). Eraser did nothing. Still same problems. Device history is clear except for the current hike, which has not yet been transferred.

A couple of weeks ago, I used a bit of sandpaper on the contacts, which I recall helped at that time but I don't want to have to do that with every upload.

The FAQ and your search link work in Chrome browser. Works in Pale Moon Browser. BUT does not work in FF 41.0. Weird.

The error is a JAVA error which could be an Add-on or another piece of software inhibiting it, I used a slightly different URL for the FAQ below. There isn't one answer to the issue but on a device like the 305 I suggest you create a test activity of more than 30 seconds. Make sure to hold the Lap/Reset button down until it counts back from 3 then try to Sync it. After your next successful sync I suggest you Master Reset it.

    How do I perform a reset on my Forerunner 305, 205, 301, 201 or 101?

If you continue to have trouble I suggest you contact Garmin Product Support by phone so the issue can be thoroughly investigated.

Java. Yes, I forgot that I don't have Java plugin installed in FF.

I already have an activity on the watch. What is the purpose of creating a new one?

I can try a master reset but not until I get the current activity uploaded. So a bit of a catch 22.

I got the upload to work after I rebooted the computer.
