BaseCamp being too smart when creating a route

I am creating a route for a motorcycle tour around Lake Michigan. BaseCamp seems to want to optimize the path I draw when I do not want it to. If I am on a highway with intersecting streets and simply click from one point on the highway to the next, BaseCamp will sometimes create a route along the intersecting streets back to the highway, something akin to a detour. I have encountered this regardless of whether the Route Preference is Faster Time or Shorter Distance. Is there a way to get BaseCamp to stop being smart? I am running BaseCamp 4.5.0.
  • Well it could be the fact that is the quickest route. If its not the way you want to go insert a viapoint or two so that the route does what you want.

You might also check you don't have avoid highways set.
  • Try setting the preferences within the the motorcycle activity profile. Edit>Options>Activity Profile>Motorcycling>Routing. Set to Faster Time, turn off any Road Type Avoidances and turn off Feature Type Avoidances except perhaps Cable Cars, Narrow Trails & Climbing Paths.

Then, when creating a route be sure to use the Motorcycling activity profile. Use enough via points to direct the route to the roads you want.

There is a great BaseCamp Tutorial on the New England Riders webpage you may want to download: http://www.newenglandriders.org/Learn_BaseCamp.htm

Thanks. I have removed all road type and feature type avoidances. This is making a difference. I have been adding enough via points as a workaround but on a 1000+ mile route, it is tedious.

    Thank you for the help.
