Uploading Maps from Nationalmap.gov into Basecamp and GPSr (Oregon 650t)

Hi:

How can I upload a map from the nationalmap.gov website into Basecamp and my Oregon 650t?

I'd like to add the terrain maps and wetland overlays for some trail work I'm doing. Trailtech's post on the developer's forum and the discussions indicate that maps from the national map website should be loadable.
See: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?4407-Sources-for-Maps

I've tried loading an ".img" file from the National Map zip file without any success, and cannot understand how to build installer program to allow the Oregon 650t to read it. I installed Qgis to process the shape files (ArcGIS) formats and was able to produce a .kmz file that includes several geo-referenced jpeg files (tiles?). I have also manually geo-referenced .jpg and .tif using the GoogleEarth procedure described.

These work, sort of, but do not scale well when zooming in/out on the handheld device.

I was not able to figure out how to get cgpsmapper to work.

I'd like to be able to "process" these files so they do scale appropriately on the hand held. Any suggestions or guidance?

Thanks!

Steve
