CReating POIs

I'm trying to create some custom pois in excel. However, my Nuvisays it "Cannot calculate the route" What am I doing wrong?

I'm following the instructions on http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/creating_custom_poi_files.jsp under "Creating a .csv File in Microsoft Excel "

Here is a sample line:

Column A = Longitude Column B = Latitude Column C = Name
51.4221651 -3.2679614 Barry

Suggestions greatfully received.
  • I'm slightly confused. Exactly when are you getting the 'cannot calculate route' message? Creating custom POIs is a separate process from creating routes.

I "created" the POIs (or thought I did!) and uploaded them to my SAT NAV. However, when I try to navigate to a POI I get the error message.
  • Are the POIs within the area covered by the map? Are they on a road?

    Here is a sample line:

    Column A = Longitude Column B = Latitude Column C = Name
    51.4221651 -3.2679614 Barry

    .....

First off, it is theLongitude that has to have the minus sign, not the latitude. So it should be
    -51.4221651 3.2679614 Barry

Redo your csv file and try again. Before attempting a route, just look under custom POI's on the unit to see if they show up and are in the right place. THEN try a route to one or two.

Also, Poiloader can only have one csv file in the from directory at a time or it will concatenate the csv files. Patience.....wait till you try to create a custom icon for your custom POI's!

EDIT: Upon further reflection, if you want your POI to be in the Indian Ocean somewhere, your numbers are correct. If you are somewhere in Brazil, you could have either - or + latitude, but your longitude would still have to be negative.

    Yes they are.

    -51.4221651 3.2679614 Barry

It depends on where Pircman lives... N 3.2679614 W 51.4221651 gives me a location in the wilderness of northern Brazil; does not make sense to me. On the other hand, S 3.2679614 E 51.4221651 is a location in the Indian Ocean; that can't be correct either (can't blame the nüvi for not finding a route).

N 51.4221651 W 3.2679614 is a location near Barry, Wales, UK; that should be it...

The confusion is caused by the fact that coordinates usually are given as Latitude Longitude (as I did), whereas POI Loader requires the reverse (Longitude Latitude). So the proper entry should be:

    -3.2679614 51.4221651 Barry

There is a minor problem though: these coordinates will put you right in the middle of a large field. Your nüvi won't like it when there are no roads nearby, and most probably will tell you: "Cannot calculate the route"

A better location would be something like this:
    -3.28847 51.3979666 Barry

It's worked reversing the coordinates! Thanks all for the help.
