Lock routes function

I have been searching for some way to lock a route, so that it won't be recalculated if I change settings. As far as I can see, there is no such function.
Too many times I have messed up older routes that I want to keep. I know I can use the track function, but there are, for my taste, too many points and too many back and forth and round and round in small towns searching for a hotel.

Have I missed something?
If not, it would be nice to have Garmin introduce a function to lock routes so that they can be kept, regardless of map version, Basecamp version or myself causing the mess (the last being the most common, I fear)

  • You could create a custom route setting, and only use that for routes you want 'locked'. They would remain 'as is' unless you altered the settings within the custom route.

I do this when travelling in France, one is set to be driving avoiding tolls and one driving not avoiding tolls. These are separate activity profiles to anything else I use.

Thank's Sussamb. That's a good workaround. But still, I will encourage the Garmin developers to add a "Lock route"-function.

  • Good suggestion (and workaround)!

From personal experience I definitely see the value. Adding it to the list.

How do I create a custom route setting? JB

Agree a lock-route function would be an extremely important option when exporting from Basecamp to device. Found this thread when I was searching how to do it as I assumed it would be possible. Earlier I justifiably assumed that pre-planned routes would be locked by default when exported. (Otherwise why bother, really). However, when traveling in the south Gobi desert in Mongolia, the route I had planned so carefully on unpaved roads and exported to my device simply recalculated without my noticing for a spell after I took a wrong fork. It put me well off course before I was aware that I was headed into the wrong valley. I had changed no settings on then fly, but the route simply recalculated after the wrong fork sending me on a very remarkable, but unplanned, excursion well off the beaten path. I did notice in time to turn back, but decided to press on confident in my new routing. I was using an awesomely accurate custom map created by a local auto repair chain.

At the very least a well highlighted warning that exported routes are not fixed and can recalculate would be helpful until a lock route option can be sensibly developed. Love Basecamp. Love my Garmin which usually keeps me out of trouble instead of heading me into it. So here am I ... another voice calling for this functionality.

  • While you're right it would be nice this is more a device issue than BaseCamp. Some devices, eg the zumo series, you can send tracks that aren't recalculated. You don't say which type of device you have but try making your suggestion here
