Shaping points being turned into locations on transfer from Basecamp to Edge Touring

I seem to be having a problem between Basecamp 4.5.1 and my Edge Touring Plus, which as far as I can tell only began recently, possibly with the release of 4.5.1.

Basically I have several times received the warning on the ETP that "Location Memory is full". Investigation shows that what should be shaping points in my routes have been changed into waypoints/locations. I have also noticed that despite using a blue flag exclusively for all my saved location they appear to be turned into assorted symbols on the ETP or when read back into Basecamp. These points now appear on the map screen of the ETP, which is extremely useless to me.

I've tried manually removing the locations file and all routes/courses and also one factory reset, and keep resending the routes, but still the problems persist. Is there something I could have done to create this mess or is Basecamp or my ETP borked?

TIA.
  • I don't have an Edge but does it allow shaping points? Only some Garmins do, and when not they are converted to standard viapoints.

If in BaseCamp you first create waypoints and then add them to a route and do not delete the waypoints, then the waypoints will be send to the Edge as waypoints and show up as Locations.

Delete the waypoints (really delete them out of BC, not just remove them from the list), or export the route manually to a GPX file (and not include the waypoints) and put that GPX in the Edge NewFiles folder is also a method to send the route to the Edge, whiteout the waypoints.

Best practice: only use waypoints for start and sometimes lunch locations and the rest should be via-points created with the route creating tool and edit tools, then only the route will be send to your Edge. Making waypoints shaping points is not going to help, they still are waypoints/locations.

That the symbol is not the same for waypoint/locations is correct, very different indeed. You can change the symbol in the Edge itself.

For the Edge there is also a second kind of wapoints and these are called course points, these are included in the track/course to the Edge but to not polute Locations. The only way to create course points is using the older Garmin Training Center software. Make a route in BC, convert it to a track, export it to disk, inport it as course in TC and then add course points.
Course point are like: food, water, hill cat x, hole, corner, left/right,...
  • I haven't changed anything that I have been doing since getting the ETP last December. I normally use Basecamp to create a route/course between two waypoints - e.g. Home and Lunch. Then I use the INSERT tool to add and drag a shaping point into the route/course and repeat until I am happy. For months this has worked exactly as expected and desired.

But for the last week or two each of these shaping points (no alert) is being converted to a waypoint and being added to the locations list on the ETP. This never used to happen. now it is happening for every route/course I create. the only obvious change which roughly coincides with this behaviour is the release of Basecamp 4.5.1. that might be coincidental, but whatever the reason I'd like to go back to the old system. I just don't know what to do to fix it.
  • I've just sent a route with 3 shaping points to my nuvi using v4.5.1. Everything worked as expected so the issue isn't a Basecamp one.

Has your Edge had a software update?
  • Not to my knowledge. I did recently download a fresh set of OSM maps, which I use in preference to the original Garmin ones, but the same map type and supplier, just a newer version by three months. I'll see if I can locate a copy of BC 4.5 and reinstall that.
  • TY. Downloading now.

EDIT : 4.5 won't install. Installation aborts with MSI installation error and it deletes the Basecamp executable, rendering Basecamp dead. I've had to reinstall 4.5.1 in order to regain a working Basecamp.
  • I just used Windows Explorer to delete all courses and locations from my ETP and then sent a single course from Basecamp 4.5.1 to the device. Here is the course in Basecamp....

Over on the ETP here is how the course looks, with all the shaping points visible on the map....

And here is how my list of saved locations now looks....

IfI then reconnect the ETP to Basecamp and look at the internal storage I see the following assets....

It's filling up my device with rubbish. Is there anything obvious about the course in Basecamp to suggest the cause of the problem? I'm loathe to reset the ETP again because it is a PITA to set everything up yet again.
  • I just completely uninstalled Basecamp 4.5.1 and installed Basecamp 4.5 from scratch. I created a couple of short routes with shaping points, this time using Garmin's own maps, and sent them to the ETP, which now only has Garmin maps installed. The problem continues. I'm now going to have to try another factory reset on the ETP. Not happy, but what else is there?

    EDIT :
    And still the problem persists.

I guess I'll have to contact Garmin.
  • As it's the weekend I won't be able to contact Garmin for a while, so as a desperate measure I clean installed Windows 10 from scratch. Now extra location waypoints are the least of my problems. I've installed Basecamp 4.5.1 and expected to be able to pick up my data from cloud storage, where I saved everything earlier today. I've signed in OK and there is nothing whatsoever in my cloud. On top of that, when I try to close Basecamp it crashes and I lose all lists, folders and other assets created within it. I guess I have no choice but to pick this up on Monday. Naturally all my non Garmin software is working just fine.
