How Modify Route made from a Track?

From a large track (300 mile oval shape) I performed the command "Create Route from Selected Track". The route now follows precisely the track.

Now, I want to modify the route but cannot. Whenever I attempt to as an example: add a shaping point to the route, the entire route collapses to a fastest route from the start to the attempted shaping point. I have attempted to add a shaping point at the extreme end of the route and the route collapses into a single route following same path to and from the extreme end.

How do I modify a route without destroying the remaining existing path of the route?

The only way I can see now, is to trace a route over the track.

Do you have any ideas on how to modify a route made from a track?

Thank you
  • This issue was resolved in an update to Basecamp, I've just tried on mine (v4.5.1) and inserting points works as expected. Which version are you running?
  • Im using Basecamp which installed version 4.5.1 about a week ago. The track I used is from a published Adventure titled "Hunting Beach to Julian Pie Run" which is in Southern California. I attempted to attached a .zip of the gpx, if that would help troubleshoot, from this Adventure but wasnt successful.

Maybe Im doing something wrong or need to adjust a setting? With the Pan or Hand selected I use "Alt" and left mouse button over the route to drag or insert a shaping point and the entire route collapses.
  • I simply used the insert and move tool, I've also now tried using the Alt + hand tool and it works using that method also, so I suspect it's something to do with your original track.
  • Where you able to try it with the track I provided?
  • The problem is that when you add a via point BaseCamp will recalculate the complete route using the existing via points. Because a route converted from a track contains just two (or three with the one you're trying to add) via points, it's not going to stay intact.
Set BaseCamp to "Direct routing" before you convert the track to a route; that way BC will create a route with multiple via points. Then select another profile and recalculate the route.

    Great tip!!!

Thanks for the great tip, JaVaWa!

    Thank you for the input.
I tried but now what happens is that for a "U" shaped track, it provides only a route across the ends (closing the U) and not following the track. This happens in whatever setting the Activity Profile is in.
Any idea what I can do different.? The only solution I have is to trace a new route using the track as a guide.
  • If I understand correctly, you are trying to convert the Track from the “Huntington Beach to Julian Pie Run” to a Route. This is a ca. a 280 mile/ 7000 point track.

First, you need to understand that most devices have limits on the number of points allowed for the two types of Routes Garmin supports. These types are Direct and Automated/Calculated where the latter is any Activity Profile type except Direct. Direct Routes go directly from user point to user point. Automated Routes must follow routable features between user points (e.g. roads) and require a Map that contains these features (the Global Map does not contain routable features); otherwise the Route will remain look just like the Direct Route. My device limits Direct Routes to 250 points and Automated Routes to 50 points. The number of points in a route can be seen on the Route Properties summary (More Info box checked).

It is best to have a clean slate, so I suggest you move the Adventure Track to an empty list. Next, you will want to convert the Track to Route, keeping in mind that you will need to stay within the point limits of your device and will want room for editing. I chose to convert the Track to a Route with 15 points – possibly I could have used less, the fewer the better. My older version of BaseCamp created a Direct Route, if yours does not, it is probably okay, but you can try changing the Activity Profile toolbar to Direct as suggested. Now is a good time to check to see if the points selected are actually on roads and move them to roads if they are not – chances are few will be on roads.

Next, change the Activity Profile from Direct to an “Automated” profile. Don’t get hung up on names. This was a Motorcycle trip, but the Driving profile is probably better choice in this case. So, having changed the profile to Driving and recalculating the Route it is time to make corrections. The goal when choosing the number of points for Track to Route conversion is to get an Automated Route that comes as close to the original Track with the fewest points. Set the Track and Route to contrasting colors so they are easy to view errors in the Route when clicking between the two objects in the lower left pane.

To duplicate the Track, I had to add four points using the insert tool. One at the start (corner of Jamboree and Bison) and three at the end (235 N Newport, Pacific View Ave and 452 Orange Ave).

From here, you should be able to modify it as you desire by moving/adding/deleting points. Hope this helps.
  • Thanks very much for the very detailed explanation.

I was not aware there was such a low limitation in the number of tracking points for the conversion feature to work. I would typically do a 250 mile ride.

I think the easiest thing for me then, with all the complexity you describe, is to import a track and then manually create a route by tracing over it.

    Thanks again
